Overview

The Victor Taichung VMT-X260 puts a larger turning spindle on the same frame as the VMT-X200. The main spindle has an A2-8 nose with a 10 in chuck, 3,500 rpm and Ø75 mm (Ø2.95 in) of bar capacity, while the working envelope stays at Ø500 mm (Ø19.68 in) turning diameter and 1,075 mm (42.32 in) turning length.

Bar size is the reason to choose it. The step from Ø52 mm on the VMT-X200 to Ø75 mm (Ø2.95 in) here covers a wide band of shaft and hydraulic work, and the maker gives 22 kW of turning power for this model. Top speed drops to 3,500 rpm in exchange, which matters little at these diameters.

The two spindles are not a matched pair. In the Double SP column the sub-spindle is an A2-6 unit with an 8 in chuck, 4,000 rpm and Ø66 mm (Ø2.59 in) of bar capacity, so it is the smaller of the two and a part passed across must suit the smaller chuck. That column shows no tailstock quill and a weight of 12,000 kg (26,455.43 lb). The Single SP keeps the M.T. #5 tailstock and is listed at 12,500 kg (27,557.74 lb). In practice the choice is between supporting long shafts on a centre and finishing both ends in one cycle.

Milling is the same as on its smaller sibling: a 12,000 rpm HSK-T63 spindle rated 15 / 18.5 / 22 kW (20 / 25 / 30 HP), a 40-tool magazine and 260 mm (10.2 in) of Y travel.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø75 mm (Ø2.95 in) bar capacity through an A2-8 main spindle with a 10 in chuck
  • 22 kW of turning power is given for this model, against 15 kW for the VMT-X200
  • Double SP sub-spindle runs to 4,000 rpm and passes Ø66 mm (Ø2.59 in) bar
  • 12,000 rpm HSK-T63 milling spindle with 40 tools and 260 mm (10.2 in) of Y travel

Limitations

  • Main spindle tops out at 3,500 rpm, so small-diameter finishing runs below ideal surface speed
  • The sub-spindle is a size smaller than the main spindle: A2-6 with an 8 in chuck
  • The Double SP column lists no tailstock quill, so long shafts need the Single SP or a steady rest
  • The turning envelope is no larger than the VMT-X200: Ø500 mm (Ø19.68 in) by 1,075 mm (42.32 in)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the VMT-X260 differ from the VMT-X200?

In the turning spindle. The VMT-X260 has an A2-8 nose with a 10 in chuck, 3,500 rpm and Ø75 mm (Ø2.95 in) bar capacity. The VMT-X200 has an A2-6 nose with an 8 in chuck, 4,200 rpm and Ø52 mm (Ø2.04 in). Turning diameter, turning length, milling spindle and magazine are the same on both.

02 Does the VMT-X260 have a tailstock?

The Single SP column lists an M.T. #5 tailstock quill. The Double SP column, which has the sub-spindle, shows none. A steady rest is on the option list for shaft work that needs support.

03 What are the sub-spindle figures on the VMT-X260 Double SP?

4,000 rpm, an A2-6 nose with an 8 in chuck, and Ø66 mm (Ø2.59 in) bar capacity. That is smaller than the main spindle, which has an A2-8 nose, a 10 in chuck and Ø75 mm (Ø2.95 in) of bar capacity.

04 How much does the VMT-X260 weigh?

Victor Taichung lists 12,500 kg (27,557.74 lb) for the Single SP and 12,000 kg (26,455.43 lb) for the Double SP. Both figures call for a rigging plan and a checked floor before delivery.
