Overview

The Victor Taichung VMT-X400 is the heaviest-chucking model of the VMT-X turn-mill range: a 15 in chuck on an A2-11 spindle nose, 2,500 rpm, and a turning envelope of Ø720 mm (Ø28.34 in) by 2,100 mm (82.67 in). It shares its bed with the VMT-X360 and differs from it in the chuck and the top speed.

A 15 in chuck grips the large-diameter end of the range properly. Flanged shafts, valve bodies and rolls near the Ø720 mm (Ø28.34 in) limit sit better in it than in the 12 in chuck of the VMT-X360, and 2,500 rpm is ample at those diameters. Bar capacity stays at Ø91 mm (Ø3.58 in), so nothing is gained for bar work. The maker gives 30 kW of turning power.

Ordered as a Double SP, the machine gets a second spindle with the same 15 in chuck, A2-11 nose, 2,500 rpm and Ø91 mm (Ø3.58 in) bore. Two full-size chucks on a 2,100 mm (82.67 in) bed allow a heavy part to be turned end for end without a crane lift between operations. The Single SP column lists an M.T. #5 tailstock quill instead.

The milling side is an HSK-T63 spindle at 12,000 rpm, rated 15 / 18.5 / 22 kW (20 / 25 / 30 HP), with 60 tools. Weight is listed at 23,600 kg (52,029.03 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 15 in chuck on an A2-11 nose for work up to Ø720 mm (Ø28.34 in)
  • Double SP adds a second 15 in chuck spindle at 2,500 rpm with Ø91 mm (Ø3.58 in) through it
  • 2,100 mm (82.67 in) turning length under a Ø1,120 mm (Ø44.09 in) swing over the bed
  • 60 HSK-T63 tools for the 12,000 rpm milling spindle

Limitations

  • 2,500 rpm is the lowest main spindle speed in the VMT-X range
  • Bar capacity is Ø91 mm (Ø3.58 in), no more than the VMT-X360
  • Milling spindle power, 15 / 18.5 / 22 kW (20 / 25 / 30 HP), is modest beside the 30 kW given for turning
  • The machine weighs 23,600 kg (52,029.03 lb)

Best For

Heavy chuck work near Ø720 mm (Ø28.34 in) with milling in the same set-up Large parts machined on both ends between two 15 in chucks Long shafts on the M.T. #5 tailstock of the Single SP Parts with many milled and drilled features, up to 60 tools

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What chuck size does the VMT-X400 take?

A 15 in chuck on an A2-11 spindle nose, with a maximum speed of 2,500 rpm. The Double SP column lists the same nose, chuck size and speed for the sub-spindle.

02 Should I pick the VMT-X400 or the VMT-X360?

Both turn Ø720 mm (Ø28.34 in) by 2,100 mm (82.67 in) and pass Ø91 mm (Ø3.58 in) bar. The VMT-X400 has a 15 in chuck at 2,500 rpm; the VMT-X360 has a 12 in chuck at 3,000 rpm. Larger, heavier chuck work points to the 15 in chuck, bar and slender shaft work to the faster spindle.

03 What is the weight of the VMT-X400?

23,600 kg (52,029.03 lb) in both the Single SP and Double SP columns. Plan the foundation, the access route and the lifting equipment around that figure before the machine ships.

04 Which options does Victor Taichung list for the VMT-X400?

The option list for the VMT-X series includes a sub-spindle, a steady rest, coolant through the spindle, a bar feeder interface and a Siemens control with a 19 in screen. A Fanuc control with a 15 in screen is the standard.
