Overview
The Toshiba Machine BTD-200 is a large-scale floor-type CNC horizontal boring and milling machine with a 200 mm diameter spindle, designed for the most demanding heavy machining applications in the power generation, shipbuilding, and heavy industrial sectors. Produced by Toshiba Machine Co., Ltd. (now Shibaura Machine Co., Ltd.) in Japan, the BTD-200 represents the upper end of the company's horizontal boring mill range, providing extreme spindle torque, large-format axis travels, and the precision demanded by critical heavy-part machining.
With a 200 mm spindle diameter — among the largest in the floor-type boring mill category — the BTD-200 delivers over 100 kW of spindle power and spindle torque exceeding 60,000 Nm in peak gearbox conditions, enabling roughing cuts of extraordinary depth and width in cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, and nickel alloys. The floor plate work zone accommodates workpieces of essentially unlimited weight, bolted or fixtured directly to precision T-slot floor plates that extend tens of meters in the X-axis direction.
The BTD-200 is equipped with a Fanuc 31i-B5 or Siemens 840D sl CNC, supporting full 5-axis simultaneous interpolation including facing head U-axis operations. The optional CNC facing head (U-axis) is a major feature of the BTD-200 in power generation applications — it enables in-situ turning, facing, and grooving of flanges, journal diameters, and large bore features on parts too heavy to transfer to a lathe. Automatic tool changers with 60 to 120 positions handle the wide variety of large boring bars, face mills, drills, and taps required in complex large-part programs.
Toshiba Machine's BTD-200 installations are found in the world's leading turbine manufacturers, nuclear component fabricators, and large naval shipyards, where the machine's combination of extreme spindle power, precision, and massive work zone size is unmatched by smaller platforms. These are long-lived, high-capital assets that are typically configured and engineered to order for each customer's production requirements.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 200 mm spindle diameter with 60,000+ Nm peak torque enables the heaviest roughing cuts in the floor-type boring mill class
- Floor plate architecture accommodates parts of essentially unlimited weight — turbine casings, nuclear reactor components, ship engine blocks
- Optional CNC facing head enables in-situ turning and facing of large flanges and bores without part transfer to a lathe
- Large travels configurable to customer's specific part range — machine is engineered to application requirements
Limitations
- Extremely high capital cost — suitable only for large OEMs and tier-1 manufacturers with sustained demand for this capability
- Facility requirements (floor plate, foundations, overhead crane, chip handling) add significantly to total project cost
- Lead time from order to commissioning is typically 18–36 months for fully configured machines

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Spindle diameter in horizontal boring mills directly determines the size of boring bar that can be used, and therefore the maximum bore diameter and the rigidity of the tool-workpiece engagement. A 200 mm spindle accepts boring bars of sufficient diameter and overhang to bore large turbine shaft bores and cylinder bores in a single pass at full depth, which is not possible with smaller 100–130 mm spindles.
02
Toshiba Machine's BTD series scales from approximately 110 mm to 200 mm spindle diameter. Each step up in spindle diameter brings proportionally higher spindle power, torque, axis travels, and machine weight. The BTD-200 is the largest production model, targeting power generation, nuclear, and naval applications. Smaller BTD models (110, 130, 160 mm) serve heavy industrial, aerospace, and energy applications requiring less extreme capacity.
03
The BTD-200 is used on cast iron, carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, nickel superalloys (Inconel, Hastelloy), and large titanium structural components. Its extreme torque output is particularly valuable in high-alloy materials where specific cutting forces are high. It is not used for aluminum, composites, or non-ferrous materials where its scale and power are unnecessary.
