Overview

Six linear CNC axes on a 20 mm bar machine: the MANURHIN K'MX 620 is the K'MX 520 with a Y2 axis added to the cross slide. It turns Ø 20 mm (0.8 in) bar, 200 mm (7.9 in) per stroke, on two 12,000 rpm motor spindles, and comes with sub-spindle, driven tools and bar feeder as standard.

Y2 has 66 mm (2.6 in) of travel. That is enough to put tools at different heights on the cross slide, and the tool count there rises to 8+3 against 4+1 on the MANURHIN K'MX 520. In practice the back-working side stops being a place for a cut-off pickup and a single drill; off-centre holes and milled features on the second end become possible without a special holder. The main slide is unchanged at (2 x 5) + (2 x 4) tools, with X1 and Y1 travels of 60 mm and 167 mm.

Power is modest. The main spindle delivers 3.7 / 5.5 kW (100% / 25%) and the sub-spindle 2.2 / 3.7 kW (100% / 30 min). Driven tools have 1 kW and 8,000 rpm. Torque is 4.8 Nm on OT4, and the optional OT1, OT5, OT2 and OT3 units give 5.5 Nm or 5.8 Nm. Size the milling work to those numbers.

The brochure lists the linear axis accelerations individually, with Y2 the quickest at 13,0 m/s2, and a single rapid traverse of 25 m/min for all axes. Control is FANUC 0i-TF Plus. The footprint is that of the five-axis machine, 1,980 x 1,230 x 1,813 mm at 2,300 kg, so the extra axis costs no floor space.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Y2 axis with 66 mm (2.6 in) of travel on the cross slide for off-centre work on the sub-spindle side
  • 8+3 tools on the cross slide in addition to (2 x 5) + (2 x 4) on the main slide
  • Both spindles run to 12,000 rpm and can machine simultaneously
  • Same 1,980 x 1,230 x 1,813 mm footprint and 2,300 kg (5,071 lb) weight as the five-axis MANURHIN K'MX 520
  • Standard package includes sub-spindle, driven tools and bar feeder

Limitations

  • Driven tools are limited to 1 kW; the highest listed torque is 5.8 Nm, on optional units
  • Main spindle power of 3.7 / 5.5 kW restricts heavy roughing in tough alloys
  • Maximum machining length per stroke is 200 mm (7.9 in)
  • Evacuation through the sub-spindle is optional and limited to workpieces of Ø 17 mm

Best For

Ø 20 mm bar parts with milled or off-centre features on the back end Complex small parts finished complete on main and sub-spindle Work that outgrows a five-axis Swiss-type lathe but not its footprint High-speed turning of small diameters at up to 12,000 rpm

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the sixth axis on the MANURHIN K'MX 620 do?

It is Y2, the vertical travel of the cross slide that serves the sub-spindle, with 66 mm of stroke. With it the cross slide carries 8+3 tools and can place them above or below centre. The six linear axes are X1, Y1, Z1, X2, Y2 and Z2, with rotary axes C1 and C2.

02 Is the K'MX 620 bigger than the K'MX 520?

No. The MANURHIN K'MX 520 and the 620 share the same listed dimensions, 1,980 x 1,230 x 1,813 mm, the same 2,300 kg weight, the same Ø 20 mm bar capacity and the same spindle ratings. The differences are the Y2 axis and the larger tool count on the cross slide.

03 How strong are the spindles?

The main motor spindle is rated 3.7 / 5.5 kW (100% / 25%) and the sub-spindle 2.2 / 3.7 kW (100% / 30 min). Both reach 12,000 rpm. The main spindle bore is 24.5 mm and the sub-spindle bore Ø 21 mm.

04 Can it work without a guide bush?

The brochure shows two kinematic arrangements: without a driven guide bushing and with a driven guide bushing. The standard description is a rotating guide bush synchronized with the main spindle by pulleys and belts. Guide bushes are type i357.

05 What control is fitted?

A FANUC 0i-TF Plus. The maker describes it as a latest-generation CNC chosen for easy and fast programming and shorter setup times, and states that both spindles can machine simultaneously with driven tools available to each.
