Overview

The Supertec GM-35CNC is the entry model of the GrindMaster series, a three-axis chucking grinder that works a bore, an outside diameter and a face without releasing the part. The workhead carries the chuck and moves on X. Two wheelheads face it: a combined ID/OD head on the Y axis and a second ID head on the Z axis.

Capacity is set by the chuck and the short work zone. Internal diameters from Ø6~Ø200 mm (Ø0.2~Ø7.9 in) can be ground, outside diameters up to Ø350 mm (14 in), on workpieces no longer than 200 mm (8 in). The standard chuck is a 6 in hydraulic three-jaw on an A2-5 spindle nose, and the stated load limit is 50 kg (110 lb). Rings, bushes, gears and bearing races are the natural fit.

The OD wheel is Ø405 × 50 × Ø127 mm (Ø16 × 2 × Ø5 in), driven at 1,800 rpm by a 5.6 kW (7.5 hp) motor. On this model the wheelhead infeed angle is fixed at 30°, where the two larger GrindMaster machines give a range. Each internal spindle is ordered at one speed, chosen from 8,000 / 15,000 / 20,000 / 30,000 rpm, so the bore sizes to be ground should be settled before the order is placed.

Travels are 575 mm (23 in) on X, 350 mm (14 in) on Y and 400 mm (15.7 in) on Z, all at 8 m/min rapid. Supertec describes the X axis as a closed-loop design. The machine weighs 4,700 kg (10,361 lb) net and has a 260 L coolant tank.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • ID, OD and face grinding in one chucking, with two wheelheads on separate CNC axes
  • Internal grinding range of Ø6~Ø200 mm (Ø0.2~Ø7.9 in) and external grinding up to Ø350 mm (14 in)
  • 5.6 kW (7.5 hp) OD spindle with a Ø405 × 50 × Ø127 mm (Ø16 × 2 × Ø5 in) wheel
  • Workhead swivels manually 30° clockwise or counter-clockwise for tapers
  • Lightest GrindMaster at 4,700 kg (10,361 lb) net

Limitations

  • Workpiece length is limited to 200 mm (8 in), against 300 mm (12 in) on the GM-45CNC
  • Wheelhead infeed angle is a fixed 30°
  • Each ID spindle runs at a single speed chosen at order from 8,000 / 15,000 / 20,000 / 30,000 rpm
  • Load limit of 50 kg (110 lb) rules out heavy rings

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What can the Supertec GM-35CNC grind in one setup?

Supertec describes the GrindMaster as controlling the workhead, the ID/OD wheelhead and the ID wheelhead by CNC, so that with one chucking it performs internal diameter, outside diameter, shoulder, taper and end-surface grinding. The examples given pair a straight or tapered bore with a straight or tapered outside diameter.

02 What are the travels of the three axes?

X (workhead) travels 575 mm (23 in), Y (ID/OD wheelhead) 350 mm (14 in) and Z (ID wheelhead) 400 mm (15.7 in). All three rapid at 8 m/min and each has a 1.2 kW (1.6 hp) servo motor. The minimum increment is 0.001 mm on every axis.

03 Which chuck does the GM-35CNC come with?

A 6 in hydraulic three-jaw chuck, with an 8 in chuck as the option, mounted on an A2-5 spindle nose. The workhead spindle motor is 3 kW (4.0 hp) and the speed is variable up to Max. 1,000 rpm. Swing over the table is Ø400 mm (16 in).

04 How does the GM-35CNC compare with the GM-80CNC?

The GM-80CNC is the large machine of the series: Ø800 mm (31 in) of external grinding diameter, an 8 in chuck on an A2-6 nose and a servo B axis on the wheelhead. The GM-35CNC grinds up to Ø350 mm (14 in) outside, has no B axis and weighs 4,700 kg (10,361 lb), against the 7,700 kg (16,975 lb) of the GM-80CNC.
