STM MicroCut 4.0 — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the STM MicroCut 4.0 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from STM Waterjet or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The STM MicroCut 4.0 is a micro waterjet cutting system: a fully enclosed machine on a granite bed, driven by linear motors, with positioning accuracy and repeatability both stated as ± 0.0025 mm. Traversing speed is max. 10 m/min. It is built for delicate parts in medical technology, microelectronics and sealing technology, not for plate.

Three design choices produce the accuracy figure. The machine frame carries a granite bed, which STM describes as low in vibration. The axes are moved by linear motor drives, so there is no rack, screw or belt in the drive train. And position is read by a direct absolute measuring system on the axis itself. STM's data sheet qualifies both accuracy values as per meter at 20°.

Small parts need holding as much as they need positioning, and the MicroCut 4.0 comes with a precision clamping frame that STM calls variable and high-precision. The STM Edge Tracker position laser helps with setting up the blank. A protective enclosure with an automatic door closes the cutting area completely. Z-axis clearance is 100 mm according to the data sheet, and the size graphic shows a single work surface coded 1010, with other sizes on request.

Abrasive handling is scaled to match. A 100 kg abrasive container with minihopper sits inside the machine frame with its pressure conveying system, a CNC abrasive dosing unit with intermediate hopper meters the feed, and the stainless steel catch basin has an integrated rinsing device.

Control is a NUM FLEXIUM CNC with STM SmartCut software, operated from an ergonomic control panel. The head is a 2D head as standard; the STM TAC 12° head for bevel cut compensation is listed among the options, together with water level control, a pneumatic drilling spindle and STM's BasicClean or OneClean rinsing systems.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Positioning accuracy and repeatability both stated as ± 0.0025 mm
  • Linear motor drives with a direct absolute measuring system on a granite bed
  • Precision clamping frame for holding small, delicate blanks
  • Completely enclosed, with a protective enclosure and automatic door
  • 100 kg abrasive container and pressure conveying system integrated in the machine frame
  • STM TAC 12° head available for bevel cut compensation

Limitations

  • The size graphic shows a single small work surface, coded 1010; anything larger is on request
  • Traversing speed of max. 10 m/min is a quarter of the STM PremiumCut's 40 m/min
  • Z-axis clearance is 100 mm, so thick or tall workpieces do not fit
  • No 3D head is listed for the model
  • The accuracy figure is qualified per meter at 20° only in the data sheet, not on the product page

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How accurate is the STM MicroCut 4.0?

STM states positioning accuracy of ± 0.0025 mm and repeatability of ± 0.0025 mm. The data sheet adds that both are per meter at 20°. The figures rest on linear motor drives, a direct absolute measuring system and a machine frame with a granite bed. As with any waterjet, the part tolerance also depends on the jet, so a test cut on the actual material is the real check.

02 What is the MicroCut 4.0 used for?

Extremely delicate and highly functional components. STM names medical technology, microelectronics and sealing technology as the fields it has in mind, and describes the machine as its answer to advancing miniaturization. The precision clamping frame and the enclosed work area are there for small blanks, not for sheet and plate.

03 How big is the working area of the MicroCut 4.0?

STM's work-surface graphic shows one size, coded 1010, and the page says other sizes are possible on request. No dimensions in millimetres are printed. Z-axis clearance is 100 mm in the data sheet. STM describes the external dimensions as compact but gives no footprint figures on the product page.

04 Which cutting heads does the MicroCut 4.0 take?

A 2D head is standard. The STM TAC 12° head, which swivels +/- 12 degrees on its A and B axes to compensate the taper of the jet, is listed as an option. STM states that this head compensates the angular error to +/- 0.05 mm. The 3D head offered on the STM PremiumCut is not on this model's list.

05 What control does the MicroCut 4.0 use?

A NUM FLEXIUM CNC, with STM SmartCut as the cutting software and an ergonomic control panel. The control is integrated in the machine. Abrasive feed is also under CNC: the abrasive dosing unit works with an intermediate hopper and draws from a 100 kg container built into the machine frame.
