Overview
The Jet Edge 5-Axis Beveling Head is a tilting cutting head attachment designed to retrofit onto Jet Edge Mid-Rail and High-Rail waterjet systems, converting a standard 2D waterjet table into a 5-axis cutting platform without replacing the base machine. The attachment mounts to the Z-axis of the existing cutting head assembly and adds two rotational axes — A-axis tilt and C-axis rotation — enabling the waterjet stream to be positioned at compound angles relative to the workpiece.
The primary application for the beveling head is taper compensation: standard abrasive waterjet cutting produces a slight taper on the cut wall because the abrasive jet loses energy as it traverses the material, causing the exit kerf to be narrower than the entry. By tilting the cutting head to a calculated offset angle, the kerf walls are brought to near-perpendicular, delivering cut quality that approaches laser or wire EDM without secondary machining. This is especially valuable on thick aluminum plate for aerospace ribs and skins, where part tolerances are tight and rework is costly.
Beyond taper compensation, the 5-axis head enables true bevel cutting — angled cut edges for weld prep, chamfers, countersinks, and compound-angle geometry that would otherwise require milling or grinding after waterjet blanking. Weld-prep beveling is a particularly common use case in structural steel and stainless steel fabrication, where waterjet-cut parts must be butt-welded and a 37.5-degree bevel is specified. Running the bevel head on the waterjet table eliminates a separate weld prep operation.
The Jet Edge 5-axis head is controlled through the machine's standard G-code controller with additional A and C axis commands. Setup and calibration are performed with Jet Edge's configuration tools, and the head is compatible with IGEMS and other CAM software packages that support 5-axis waterjet toolpath generation. The attachment design is engineered for field installation by qualified technicians on compatible Jet Edge table models.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Converts an existing Jet Edge waterjet table to 5-axis without replacing the entire machine
- Taper compensation produces near-perpendicular cut walls on thick material, reducing or eliminating secondary machining
- Enables weld-prep beveling, chamfers, and countersinks in a single waterjet operation
- Compatible with IGEMS and G-code CAM for 5-axis waterjet toolpath programming
- Field-installable retrofit — lower capital cost than a dedicated 5-axis waterjet system
Limitations
- Tilt range is more limited than dedicated 5-axis waterjet systems like Flow's Dynamic Waterjet XL
- Requires CAM software capable of 5-axis waterjet toolpath generation — adds programming complexity
- Compatibility is model-specific — not all Jet Edge table generations support the retrofit attachment

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The beveling head is designed for Jet Edge Mid-Rail and High-Rail series tables. Compatibility is model and generation specific — Jet Edge's applications team should confirm compatibility with the specific table serial number before ordering.
02
The tilt range varies by configuration. For taper compensation the head typically provides ±12 degrees of dynamic angle adjustment. Beveling configurations can extend to 45 degrees or more for weld-prep applications, depending on the model.
03
IGEMS has strong native support for 5-axis waterjet including taper compensation and bevel cut programming. Other CAM packages with waterjet 5-axis modules (Lantek, Almacam) are also compatible via G-code output.
04
Yes. The beveling head is rated for Jet Edge's full 60,000 psi operating pressure. Standard cutting head consumables (orifice, mixing tube) are used in the 5-axis configuration.
05
They serve similar functions but are different products. Flow's Dynamic Waterjet uses Active Tolerance Control with real-time dynamic adjustment at up to 94,000 psi. The Jet Edge beveling head is a retrofit attachment for Jet Edge tables, optimized for taper compensation and bevel cutting at 60,000 psi.
