Overview

The Star SU NXT is a 5-axis CNC tool and cutter grinder with X, Y and Z travels of 506 mm (19.9 in), 650 mm (25.6 in) and 768 mm (30.2 in) in a base machine that measures 2,300 x 2,032 x 2,284 mm. Star Cutter builds it on one modular platform, and the same machine is configured for regrinding, for producing new round tools or for sharpening gear cutting tools.

The grind zone is the reason to look at it. Maximum workpiece diameter is 254 mm (10 in), grind length is 381 mm (15 in) for end work and 406 mm (16 in) for fluting, and the wheel changer takes wheels of 203.2 mm (8 in). Star Cutter adds that workpieces up to 12 in fit when a smaller wheel is chosen. For gear tools the brochure states hobs up to 8 in OD x 10 in OAL.

All three linear axes run at 50 m/min on linear motors, which Star Cutter uses in place of ball screws, and the rotary axes have direct-drive torque motors. The base is mineral cast and a closed-loop chilling system keeps it thermally stable. Feedback comes from linear glass scales with a resolution of 0.00001 mm.

Two grinding spindles are offered, both with automatic HSK clamping: 15 kW at 24,000 RPM for regrinding and small wheels, and 28 kW at 20,000 RPM for all-purpose manufacturing. Up to 5 wheel packs sit in the changer with their coolant manifolds. Loading by a Fanuc 200iD robot is an option; it works from four pallets and takes parts up to 305 mm (12 in) long. The control is the Flexium+ CNC with NUMROTO software.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • X, Y and Z travels of 506 mm (19.9 in), 650 mm (25.6 in) and 768 mm (30.2 in) give room for workpieces up to 254 mm (10 in) in diameter
  • Linear motors on the linear axes and direct-drive torque motors on the rotary axes, with travel speeds of 50 m/min
  • Choice of a 28 kW, 20,000 RPM spindle or a 15 kW, 24,000 RPM spindle, both with automatic HSK clamping
  • Wheel changer with up to 5 storage locations loads wheel packs together with their coolant manifolds
  • Mineral cast base with a closed-loop chilling system for thermal stability

Limitations

  • Wheels in the changer are limited to 203.2 mm (8 in); the 12 in wheel size applies only with no wheel changing, manifold and probing
  • Robot loading, the 12,000 RPM wheel dresser, the traveling W-axis and laser marking are options, not part of the base machine
  • The base machine weighs 5,964 kg (13,150 lbs), so floor loading and rigging need checking before delivery
  • Automatic loading stops at parts 305 mm (12 in) long and 6.5 lb (3 kg) each; longer or heavier tools are loaded by hand

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size tools can the NXT grind?

Up to 254 mm (10 in) in diameter as standard, and Star Cutter states up to 12 in with a smaller grinding wheel. Grind length is 381 mm (15 in) for end work and 406 mm (16 in) for fluting. With the optional robot, parts are loaded automatically up to 305 mm (12 in) long.

02 Which grinding spindles are available on the NXT?

Two, both with automatic HSK clamping. The 15 kW spindle runs to 24,000 RPM and is meant for manufacturing, regrinding and high-speed work. The 28 kW spindle runs to 20,000 RPM and is the all-purpose choice for manufacturing. The specification table is written for the 28 kW (38 hp) version.

03 How is the NXT automated?

Star Cutter integrates a Fanuc 200iD robot as an option. It comes with four pallets, two for blanks and two for finished parts, and it can load, unload and flip parts so that both ends are ground. A single part can weigh up to 6.5 lb (3 kg), and the standard gripper takes diameters from 5 to 32 mm.

04 What control and software does the NXT use?

The NXT runs the Flexium+ CNC with NUMROTO, a software package for producing and resharpening tools. The rotary axes are programmed in steps of 0.0001 deg, and the linear glass scales resolve 0.00001 mm. For medical tooling Star Cutter also supplies the machine with ESPRIT CAM as a packaged solution.
