Overview

The Star SU UTG Series is a 6-axis CNC universal tool grinder built for long gear cutting tools, above all broaches. The base machine in the table is 5,500 x 2,300 x 2,500 mm, weighs 15,000 kg (33,000 lbs) and accepts workpieces up to 305 mm (12 in) in diameter and 3,200 mm (126 in) long. Star Cutter offers the series in four length variations, from the UTG-600 to the UTG-2400, and publishes one specification table for all of them.

The long axis is Z, with 2,680 mm (106 in) of horizontal travel. X travels 450 mm (17.7 in) and Y 400 mm (16 in), and all three move at 5,000 mm/min (200 in/min). That is a sharpening pace, which fits a machine that spends its time on slow, accurate passes along a broach.

Three rotary axes complete the layout. The A-axis workhead rotates the tool through 360° at up to 60 rpm, the B-axis swivels the grinding spindle through 180° in total, and the C-axis swivels it +/- 30°. The spindle runs at 10,000 rpm with 7 kW (10 hp) of peak power and carries wheels up to 203 mm (8 in), mounted by hand as HSK wheel packs.

Setup is helped by a probe system for the workpiece and the grinding wheel, and wheel truing is programmed on board. Glass scales are fitted to all linear axes, with a feedback resolution of 0.00254 mm (0.0001 in). Tailstocks and steady rests are engineered to the job and listed as options, as is automatic wheel sticking for unmanned operation. The controller is a NUM 6-axis CNC with digital servo motors.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Workpieces up to 3,200 mm (126 in) long and 305 mm (12 in) in diameter
  • Z travel of 2,680 mm (106 in) for sharpening long broaches in one setup
  • Six CNC axes: three linear, plus A-axis workhead rotation, 180° of B-axis swivel and +/- 30° of C-axis swivel
  • Probe system for workpiece and grinding wheel setup, with onboard programmable wheel truing
  • Glass scales on all linear axes with a feedback resolution of 0.00254 mm (0.0001 in)

Limitations

  • Linear axes move at 5,000 mm/min (200 in/min), slow for anything but sharpening and long form work
  • Wheel packs are mounted manually; the page lists no automatic wheel changer
  • Peak spindle power is 7 kW (10 hp), which limits heavy stock removal
  • The base machine is 5,500 mm long and weighs 15,000 kg (33,000 lbs), so it needs a prepared space

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long a broach can the UTG Series grind?

The specification table gives a maximum workpiece length of 3,200 mm (126 in) and a Z travel of 2,680 mm (106 in). Star Cutter builds the series in four length variations, from the UTG-600 to the UTG-2400, and describes it as suited to part lengths from 3 mm to 2,400 mm. Ask which variant the table figures apply to before ordering.

02 What tools is the UTG Series meant for?

Gear cutting tools and other long form tools. Star Cutter lists round, flat and spiral broaches, straight gash hobs, worm gear hobs, shaper cutters, slab mills and rack gear cutters. Maximum workpiece diameter is 305 mm (12 in) and the largest grinding wheel is 203 mm (8 in).

03 How many axes does the UTG Series have?

Six, under a NUM 6-axis CNC controller with digital servo motors. X, Y and Z are linear, with travels of 450 mm (17.7 in), 400 mm (16 in) and 2,680 mm (106 in). The A-axis rotates the workhead at up to 60 rpm, the B-axis swivels the grinding spindle 180° in total at 22 rpm, and the C-axis swivels it +/- 30° at 25 rpm.

04 What spindle does the UTG Series use?

A grinding spindle that runs at 10,000 rpm with a peak rating of 7 kW (10 hp). Wheels up to 203 mm (8 in) in diameter are mounted by hand as HSK wheel packs. Wheel truing is programmed on the machine, and automatic wheel sticking for unmanned operation is an option.
