Overview

On the PAMA Speedmat VMT the round table under the portal is a lathe chuck as much as a machining table. It is Ø1,250 - Ø2,200 mm, turns at up to 350 rpm and carries up to 8,000 kg. Above it sits the same five-axis head as on the Speedmat VM, so the machine works as a vertical turning lathe and a five-axis mill in one.

A vertical layout is the natural one for this kind of part. Rings, discs, casings and impellers lie flat on the table under their own weight, which makes them easy to centre and clamp without distortion. Swing diameter is 1,500 - 3,000 mm.

PAMA calls the table TRT and describes it as combining rolling bearings with hydrostatic support, under its own patent. The rolling element takes the speed; the hydrostatic film adds stiffness and damping for milling.

Linear travels are the VM's: 1,700 - 2,700 mm in X, 1,500 - 2,700 mm in Y and 1,300 - 1,700 mm on the crossrail in Z. Rapids reach 50,000 mm/min and acceleration is 3 m/s².

The heads carry Direct Drive spindles listed at 84 / 85 kW and 901 / 450 Nm in S6-40%, at 8,000 / 12,500 rpm. Clamping torque on the tilting axis is 8,000 Nm (5,901 lb-ft) for the HVA head and 10,000 Nm (7,376 lb-ft) for the A head. That clamped figure matters in turning, when the head is locked and the tool takes a steady load from the rotating part. The sheet does not give a turning torque or table drive power. The CNC is Siemens or Heidenhain.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Turning table of Ø1,250 - Ø2,200 mm at up to 350 rpm under a five-axis head
  • TRT table combining rolling bearings with hydrostatic support
  • A axis clamping torque up to 10,000 Nm (7,376 lb-ft) to hold the head during turning
  • Rapids up to 50,000 mm/min with 3 m/s² acceleration
  • Swing diameter of 1,500 - 3,000 mm in three sizes

Limitations

  • Table load is up to 8,000 kg, below the 12,000 kg of the milling-only Speedmat VM
  • No table drive power or turning torque is published
  • Largest turning table is Ø2,200 mm although swing reaches 3,000 mm
  • Crossrail travel of 1,300 - 1,700 mm limits part height

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the Speedmat VMT differ from the Speedmat VM?

The table. The Speedmat VM has a milling table of 1,000 x 1,000 - 2,000 x 2,000 mm for up to 12,000 kg. The Speedmat VMT has a round TRT table of Ø1,250 - Ø2,200 mm that turns at up to 350 rpm and carries up to 8,000 kg. Structure, travels and heads are shared.

02 What turning capacity does the Speedmat VMT have?

Swing diameter is 1,500 - 3,000 mm over the three sizes. The turning table is Ø1,250 - Ø2,200 mm, with a turning speed up to 350 rpm and a load capacity up to 8,000 kg. PAMA's sheet gives no table torque, so heavy turning cuts should be discussed with the maker.

03 What are the axis travels and speeds of the Speedmat VMT?

X travel of the table is 1,700 - 2,700 mm, Y travel of the headstock 1,500 - 2,700 mm and Z travel of the crossrail 1,300 - 1,700 mm. Rapid feed on X, Y and Z is up to 50,000 mm/min, and acceleration is listed as 3 m/s².

04 Which controls are available for the Speedmat VMT?

PAMA states that the range can be configured with Siemens or Heidenhain CNC. The machines also carry sensors managed by PAMA software, which the maker says supports unattended machining and reduces energy consumption.
