Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Palmary OCD-3240CAM that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Palmary OCD-3240CAM is a CNC cam cylindrical grinder with 400 mm (15.7 in) between centers. It grinds eccentric and non-round profiles up to Ø300 mm (11.8 in) by synchronising the wheel infeed with a C-axis work spindle, and it swings Ø320 mm (12.6 in).
For many cam jobs this is the natural size: small camshafts, pump cams, eccentric shafts. The table lists it at the same weight, 3,400 kg (7,496 lb), and the same 586 mm (23.1 in) table stroke as the shorter OCD-3225CAM, so the extra center distance costs nothing in footprint terms that the table reveals.
Profile accuracy on a cam grinder comes from the infeed axis keeping pace with the rotating part. Palmary's answer is a linear motor on a linear guideway, with closed loop feedback from a linear scale; it adds that the design restrains the reaction force of the linear motor under hard acceleration and deceleration, which steadies the grinding process. The X stroke is 257 mm (10.1 in).
The work spindle carries a precision angle encoder and a 5.2 kW (7.0 hp) servo, and turns at 10 to 500 rpm. The wheel is Ø355 mm by 50 mm, on 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) with an inverter. Standard accessories include the NUM controller, a fully enclosed splash guard and a micro adjustment tailstock. Options include CAD/CAM software, gap control and a touch probe gauge.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 400 mm (15.7 in) between centers at the same 3,400 kg (7,496 lb) as the shorter CAM model
- Linear motor infeed designed to restrain reaction force under acceleration, according to Palmary
- Work spindle speed up to 500 rpm with a precision angle encoder
- Retains the functions of a CNC cylindrical grinder for round work
Limitations
- Table stroke of 586 mm (23.1 in) leaves less run-off than on the standard OCD-3240
- 4 m/min (157 ipm) rapid advance
- 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) wheel motor
- The page gives no profile accuracy or lift figure

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The work spindle acts as a C axis with a built-in motor and angle encoder, and the wheel infeed, driven by a linear motor with a closed loop linear scale, follows the profile as the part turns. Palmary says this avoids backlash and stabilises the grinding process.
02
Grinding wheel head: 257 mm (10.1 in) of stroke. Table: 586 mm (23.1 in). Both have a rapid advance of 4 m/min (157 ipm) and are driven by 3.6 kW (4.8 hp) AC servo motors. The table swivels 0° to 12°.
03
Capacity is the same: Ø300 mm (11.8 in) by 400 mm (15.7 in). The OCD-3240 has a Ø405 mm wheel on 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) and a 1 kW (1.3 hp) workhead. The OCD-3240CAM has a Ø355 mm wheel on 3.7 kW (5.0 hp), a 5.2 kW (7.0 hp) workhead and NUM control.
04
CAD/CAM software is listed among the optional accessories. Palmary says the cam type was developed so that the step from workpiece drawing to grinding program is easy. Ask what the NUM controller offers for profile input without the software.
