Overview

The Oscar EDM EX 430 is a compact die-sinker EDM with 400 x 300 x 300 mm (15.7 x 11.8 x 11.8 in) of X, Y and Z travel over a 650 x 350 mm (25.6 x 13.8 in) table. At 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) it is by far the lightest of the EX machines listed beside it: the EX 750, with a 1000 x 600 mm (39.4 x 23.6 in) table, weighs 4,500 kg (9,921 lb).

The machine accepts more than the table suggests. Oscar EDM lists a maximum workpiece of 920 x 505 mm (36.2 x 19.9 in) and 550 kg (1,213 lb), so a die block can overhang the table. Height is the tighter limit. Dielectric fills to 215 mm (8.5 in) at most, and since the burn has to stay submerged, a tall insert or a stack of plates should be measured against that figure first. Between chuck and table there is 150 - 450 mm (5.9 - 17.7 in), a span equal to the 300 mm Z stroke, and the part, the electrode and its holder all have to fit inside it.

Maximum working current is 60 A and power consumption is 6 kVA. That is a generator for small and medium electrodes, such as cavity inserts, ribs and fine detail, where surface finish matters more than bulk removal. The head is rated for electrodes up to 120 kg (265 lb), so electrode mass is unlikely to be what stops a job on this machine. The generator is listed as its own 320 kg (705 lb) item to move and place.

Dielectric is held in a 380 L tank and cleaned through 3 filter elements rated at 20 μm. The control runs Windows 10 on an industrial i3 (or above) 64-bit CPU. Oscar EDM quotes up to 6 axes (XYZCUV) with a rotary table, so anything beyond plain X, Y and Z sinking depends on that table being part of the order.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Light and compact: 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) machine weight with a 650 x 350 mm (25.6 x 13.8 in) table, against 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) for the EX 750
  • Accepts workpieces up to 920 x 505 mm (36.2 x 19.9 in) and 550 kg (1,213 lb), larger than the table footprint
  • Electrode weight limit of 120 kg (265 lb) leaves margin for holders and multi-electrode fixtures
  • Modest services: 6 kVA power consumption and a 380 L dielectric tank
  • Windows 10 control with up to 6 axes (XYZCUV) when a rotary table is fitted

Limitations

  • Dielectric fill height tops out at 215 mm (8.5 in), which caps how high above the table a cavity can be burned submerged
  • 60 A maximum working current limits roughing speed on large-area electrodes
  • X travel is 400 mm (15.7 in) although workpieces up to 920 mm (36.2 in) long are allowed, so long parts must be repositioned to reach both ends
  • The 6-axis figure is quoted with a rotary table; the listing does not state which axes come as standard

Best For

Small mould inserts and cavity details within 400 x 300 mm (15.7 x 11.8 in) of X-Y travel Toolrooms with limited floor capacity, at 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) machine weight Fine-detail burns where 60 A of working current is enough Low-profile workpieces that sit under the 215 mm (8.5 in) dielectric level

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size workpiece can the EX 430 take?

Oscar EDM lists a maximum workpiece of 920 x 505 mm (36.2 x 19.9 in) and 550 kg (1,213 lb) on a 650 x 350 mm (25.6 x 13.8 in) table. Height is governed by two figures: the dielectric fills to 215 mm (8.5 in) at most, and the chuck-to-table distance is 150 - 450 mm (5.9 - 17.7 in), which has to hold the part, the electrode and the holder.

02 What is the maximum working current of the EX 430?

60 A, with power consumption listed at 6 kVA. That level suits small and medium electrode areas and finishing work. A shop that regularly roughs large cavity faces will find burn times long at this current.

03 How does the EX 430 compare with the EX 750?

The EX 750 is a much larger machine: a 1000 x 600 mm (39.4 x 23.6 in) table and 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) of machine weight, against 650 x 350 mm (25.6 x 13.8 in) and 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) for the EX 430. Both list the same Windows 10 control on an industrial i3 (or above) 64-bit CPU, so the decision comes down to part size and floor capacity.

04 What should be prepared before an EX 430 is delivered?

A supply for 6 kVA of power consumption, floor space and lifting for a 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) machine and a separately listed 320 kg (705 lb) generator, and 380 L of dielectric for the first fill. The filter set is 3 elements rated at 20 μm, so keep spares on hand.

05 How many axes does the EX 430 control?

Oscar EDM lists up to 6 axes (XYZCUV) with a rotary table. The basic travels are X 400 mm (15.7 in), Y 300 mm (11.8 in) and Z 300 mm (11.8 in). The listing does not say which of the additional axes are included as standard, so confirm the axis count on the quotation.
