Overview

Twelve feet across and nineteen feet long, the table of the Onsrud 228GW12 5-Axis measures 228 in (5,792 mm) by 144 in (3,658 mm). Onsrud lists it with a 28 in (711 mm) or a 40 in (1,016 mm) Z-stroke.

Twelve feet is the widest table class in the G-Series 5-Axis chart, and this is the shortest machine that combines it with the deep strokes. The width is there for parts with beam. A plug for a twenty-foot boat does not fit this bed in length, but its transom, deck and cabin mouldings do, and so does a catamaran hull section or the nose tool for a wide vehicle. The head can circle a part eight or nine feet across and still have table left.

The frame is 323 in (8,205 mm) long and 224 in (5,690 mm) wide. Height is 155 in (3,937 mm) with the 28 in stroke and 167 in (4,242 mm) with the 40 in stroke. Those heights and the length are the same as on the narrower 228GW10 5-Axis. Only the width differs.

A wide bridge with a deep Z-axis is a demanding structure. Onsrud describes one-piece vertical steel columns and a dual-drive helical rack for the series, and says its bases, columns, bridges and gantries are precision-welded steel. The standard spindle is 18 hp (13.4 kW), 24,000 rpm, 12 tools. Five vacuum zones are standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How wide is the Onsrud 228GW12 5-Axis table?

144 in (3,658 mm) in Y, with 228 in (5,792 mm) in X. No 5-axis G-Series table in Onsrud's chart is wider. The machine frame is 224 in (5,690 mm) wide.

02 What heights does the 228GW12 5-Axis come in?

155 in (3,937 mm) with the 28 in Z-stroke and 167 in (4,242 mm) with the 40 in Z-stroke. The frame is 323 in (8,205 mm) long in both cases.

03 What is the difference between the 228GW12 5-Axis and the 228GW10 5-Axis?

Two feet of width. The 228GW10 5-Axis has a table Y of 120 in (3,048 mm) and a frame 200 in (5,080 mm) wide. Table X, strokes, length, height and the 5 vacuum zones are the same on both.

04 How is work loaded onto the 228GW12 5-Axis?

The table is twelve feet across, so parts and fixtures are placed by crane or lift. For tooling work the usual arrangement is an overhead crane and a clear side of the machine.
