Overview
The Mazak SLANT TURN 550 is a large-bore, heavy-duty horizontal CNC lathe designed for shops that need through-spindle capacity beyond what the SLANT TURN 500 provides. With a 21-inch minimum chuck and a massive 275 mm (10.83 in) spindle bore, the ST-550 handles large-diameter pipe, tubular stock, and heavy castings that simply cannot fit through smaller machines.
The SLANT TURN 550 delivers a maximum turning diameter of 910 mm (35.83 in), matching the 500 series, but the 10.83-inch bore is the critical differentiator. This enormous through-spindle capacity enables pipe threading, facing, and turning operations on tubular stock up to 10 inches in diameter without external chuck support. The main spindle produces 45 kW (60 hp) at up to 1,200 RPM with massive torque output suited for heavy roughing at large diameters.
Multiple bed lengths are available: 1,016 mm (40 in), 2,009 mm (79.09 in), 3,144 mm (123.78 in), and 4,033 mm (158.78 in). The longest configuration provides over 13 feet of turning length for long pipe, shaft, and structural tube work. The slant-bed construction ensures rigidity and effective chip management even during aggressive cuts.
A 12-station disc turret handles standard turning operations with programmable tailstock support for shaft work. MAZATROL SmoothG provides the conversational programming interface.
The SLANT TURN 550 competes with the Okuma LB6000 EX, Doosan Puma 700, and Hwacheon Mega 68. New machines price between $280,000 and $450,000 depending on bed length. The ST-550 is the right choice when the 7.28-inch bore of the SLANT TURN 500 is not sufficient for your workpiece pass-through requirements.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 10.83-inch spindle bore is among the largest available, enabling through-spindle work on 10-inch pipe and tubular stock
- 45 kW spindle delivers massive torque for aggressive roughing at large diameters in steel and cast iron
- 35.83-inch max turning diameter handles large flanges, castings, and forgings in a single setup
- Four bed lengths up to 158 inches provide flexibility from short chucking to long pipe and shaft work
- 21-inch minimum chuck securely grips large-diameter workpieces for heavy cutting
- Slant-bed construction ensures excellent chip evacuation during aggressive heavy-duty operations
Limitations
- 1,200 RPM max spindle speed is quite slow, limiting surface speed on all but the largest diameters
- 14,000 kg machine weight requires heavy-duty foundation and crane infrastructure for installation
- No live tooling or milling capability; the 550M variant is required for cross-drilling and tapping
- Rapid traverse at 12-16 m/min is slow, adding non-cutting time on long bed configurations

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New pricing ranges from $280,000 for the short-bed to $450,000 for the extra-long bed with full options. Each bed length step adds approximately $40,000-$60,000. Used units from 2008-2020 trade between $100,000 and $250,000.
02
Step up to the 550 when you need through-spindle bore larger than 7.28 inches. The 550 provides 10.83-inch bore and a 21-inch chuck. Both share the same 35.83-inch max turning diameter, so the bore is the deciding factor.
03
Yes, large-diameter pipe threading is a primary application. The 10.83-inch bore allows pipe up to 10 inches to pass through the spindle. MAZATROL SmoothG includes conversational threading cycles for single-point, multi-start, and API threading.
04
At 14,000 kg, the ST-550 requires a reinforced concrete foundation typically 300-400 mm thick. Budget $15,000-$30,000 for foundation preparation. The extra-long bed version requires additional floor space planning.
