Overview

The Milltronics SL10-II is a 10 in chuck turning center built on an A2-8 spindle nose, with 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of spindle torque and a turning envelope of 17.7 in (450 mm) in diameter by 29.9 in (759 mm) in length. It trades speed for torque: the spindle tops out at 3,000 rpm.

Set beside the smaller lathe the pattern is plain. Power is practically unchanged, 29.5/20 hp (22.0/14.9 kW) here against 30/20 hp (22.4/14.9 kW) on the SL8-II, but torque is about 61% higher than that machine's 161 lb-ft (218 Nm) and top speed falls from its 4,000 rpm to 3,000 rpm. A 3.18 in (81 mm) draw tube and the 10 in 3-jaw hydraulic chuck go with that. This is the choice for bigger diameters and heavier cuts at lower spindle speeds.

X travel is 9.8 in (249 mm) and Z travel 31.1 in (790 mm), a little beyond the 29.9 in (759 mm) rated turning length. Swing over the bed is 22.9 in (582 mm) and over the cross slide 15.8 in (401 mm). The tailstock is sized to match, with an MT5 quill 3.54 in (90 mm) in diameter and 4.7 in (119 mm) of travel.

Twelve stations on a bi-directional turret hold 1 in (25 mm) tool shanks and boring bars to 1.5 in (38 mm). Rapid traverse is 1,183 ipm (30.0 m/min) on X and Z. Positioning accuracy is listed at ±0.0002 in (±0.005 mm) and repeatability at 0.0002 in (0.005 mm).

Allow for 10,670 lb (4,840 kg) on the floor, a nominal operating footprint of 166 x 94.8 in (4,216 x 2,408 mm), 88.5 in (2,248 mm) of height and a 24 kVA / 59 A supply at 208-240 V, 3-phase. The display is a 15 in LCD colour touch screen.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of spindle torque, about 61% more than the 161 lb-ft (218 Nm) SL8-II
  • Turns 17.7 in (450 mm) in diameter and 29.9 in (759 mm) in length
  • 3.18 in (81 mm) draw tube behind a 10 in 3-jaw hydraulic chuck
  • MT5 tailstock with a 3.54 in (90 mm) quill and 4.7 in (119 mm) of travel
  • Z travel of 31.1 in (790 mm) leaves margin past the rated turning length

Limitations

  • Spindle speed stops at 3,000 rpm; the SL8-II reaches 4,000 rpm for small-diameter work
  • Boring bars are limited to 1.5 in (38 mm) and tool shanks to 1 in (25 mm), the same as on the smaller SL8-II
  • The footprint is 166 x 94.8 in (4,216 x 2,408 mm) and the weight 10,670 lb (4,840 kg)
  • The table shows no driven-tool or Y-axis rows, so cross-drilling and milling are not covered by the listed figures

Best For

Larger-diameter turning up to 17.7 in (450 mm) that needs torque more than speed Shaft work up to 29.9 in (759 mm) with MT5 tailstock support Bar and tube that passes a 3.18 in (81 mm) draw tube Heavier roughing cuts on the 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the turning capacity of the SL10-II?

Maximum turning diameter is 17.7 in (450 mm) and maximum turning length is 29.9 in (759 mm). Swing is 22.9 in (582 mm) over the bed and 15.8 in (401 mm) over the cross slide, with 9.8 in (249 mm) of X travel and 31.1 in (790 mm) of Z travel.

02 How much torque and speed does the SL10-II spindle have?

260 lb-ft (352 Nm) with a speed range listed as 0-3,000 rpm and power of 29.5/20 hp (22.0/14.9 kW). The spindle nose is A2-8 and the draw tube is 3.18 in (81 mm) in diameter.

03 What does the SL10-II gain over the SL8-II?
