Mazak QT-Ez 12MY

The Mazak QT-Ez 12MY is the 12 in chuck QT-Ez turning center with a Y-axis: 4 in (102 mm) of Y travel with 9 in (229 mm) in X and 24 in (610 mm) in Z. The spindle runs to 3,300 rpm on a motor listed at 22 kW (30 HP) (30 min. rating), and the turning envelope is Ø14 in (356 mm) by 19 in (483 mm).

The combination points at large flanged and disc-shaped parts with features away from the centreline. A 12 in chuck and a 22 kW motor rated on a 30 min. basis handle the turning of a heavy blank; the Y travel then allows flats, slots and off-centre holes to be positioned by straight-line moves in the same clamping. On a part of large diameter, 4 in (102 mm) of total Y travel covers features close to the centreline, not those out near the rim.

Two gaps in Mazak's table affect how far that idea can be taken. No rotary-tool speed or power is listed, and without those the milling side of the machine cannot be sized. No tool capacity is listed for this model either, though the QT-Ez 12M and QT-Ez 12MSY each list 12 tools. Ask for both before committing a part.

The 3,300 rpm top speed is low for small cutters and small turned diameters. It matches the QT-Ez 12M and sits below the 4,000 rpm of the plain QT-Ez 12, which also has the larger envelope at Ø16 in (406 mm) by 21 in (533 mm) but no Y travel row. Bar capacity is Ø3 in (76 mm) and swing Ø27 in (686 mm).

From the series equipment list, the automatic door and the automatic tool eye are the items most relevant to a machine that mixes turning and milling setups. Mazak lists them for the QT-Ez range without stating whether they are standard.
