Overview
The Citizen Miyano BNE-51 is a multi-function fixed-headstock CNC lathe with live tooling and sub-spindle capability for complete part processing on components up to 51mm in diameter. Stepping up from the BNE-42, the larger bar capacity opens the door to a wider range of components while maintaining the precision and thermal stability that define the Miyano brand.
The BNE-51 delivers a main spindle speed of 5,000 RPM with a spindle motor rated at 11 kW, providing ample torque for aggressive material removal in steel and stainless steel at the 51mm bar size. The sub-spindle enables back-end operations including facing, boring, threading, and drilling, so parts come off the machine fully finished. Y-axis capability allows off-centerline milling features—flats, hexagons, keyways, and eccentric holes—to be machined without secondary operations.
The machine's thermally symmetric cast iron bed and box-way construction provide the rigidity and stability needed for consistent accuracy across temperature variations in the shop environment. Citizen's attention to thermal management is especially important at the 51mm bar size, where cutting forces and heat generation are significantly higher than at smaller diameters. The 12-station turret with live tooling accommodates the variety of tools needed for multi-operation cycles.
The BNE-51 sits in a productive middle ground between compact chucking lathes and large mill-turn centers. It handles the bread-and-butter work of many job shops and production facilities—automotive transmission components, hydraulic valve bodies, coupling nuts, and similar parts in the 25-51mm range that need both turning and secondary features. The Mitsubishi M80 control provides familiar programming with Citizen's proprietary cycle enhancements.
For shops looking to consolidate turning and milling into a single machine without the capital investment and floor space requirements of a full mill-turn center, the BNE-51 offers a practical and cost-effective solution backed by Citizen's decades of precision lathe experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new Citizen Miyano BNE-51 typically costs between $150,000 and $220,000 depending on tooling, sub-spindle configuration, and automation options. Used machines from 2015-2020 are available in the $80,000-$130,000 range depending on condition and tooling included.
02
The BNE-51 offers a larger 51mm bar capacity versus 42mm, a more powerful 11 kW spindle motor versus 7.5 kW, and greater turning length. However, the main spindle speed drops from 6,000 to 5,000 RPM due to the larger spindle bore. The BNE-51 is the better choice when parts regularly exceed 42mm diameter.
03
For many parts in the 25-51mm range, yes. The live tooling and Y-axis capability handle cross-drilling, milling flats, hexagonal profiling, and tapping. However, parts requiring heavy 3-axis milling or large pocket machining still benefit from a dedicated milling center.
04
The rigid construction and powerful spindle handle mild steel, alloy steel, stainless steel (303, 304, 316), aluminum, brass, bronze, and engineering plastics. The machine's rigidity also supports machining pre-hardened steels up to approximately 40-45 HRC with appropriate tooling and cutting parameters.
05
Standard hydrodynamic bar feeders from IEMCA, LNS, FMB, and Edge Technologies are compatible with the BNE-51's 51mm bar capacity. Magazine-style bar feeders are recommended for production runs, while single-bar loaders work well for short runs and prototyping.
