Overview

The Mazak MULTIPLEX W-200 is a twin-spindle, twin-turret CNC turning center built for high-production environments running 8-inch chuck work. Two symmetrical spindle/turret assemblies operate simultaneously, effectively doubling throughput compared to a single-spindle machine while consuming less floor space than two separate lathes.

Each spindle runs at up to 5,000 RPM with 18.5 kW (25 hp) of power through built-in motor design. The max machining diameter is 320 mm (12.6 in) with 180 mm (7.09 in) of turning length. Each turret carries 12 tool positions with live tooling capability. The symmetrical layout means both spindle/turret units are mechanically identical, simplifying maintenance and spare parts inventory.

The W-200 differs from the W-200Y variant by not including Y-axis travel, which means all milling and cross-drilling operations are limited to on-center work. For shops running primarily turning-dominant parts without off-center features, the W-200 offers the production doubling benefit at a lower price than the Y-axis model.

Both spindles and turrets can operate independently or in synchronized mode for coordinated operations. MAZATROL SmoothG handles the programming complexity of two simultaneous spindle/turret operations. Automatic workpiece transfer between spindles enables rough-on-one, finish-on-the-other workflows.

Axis travels: 195 mm (7.68 in) on X and 560 mm (22.05 in) on Z per turret. Rapids at 30 m/min on both axes. Bar capacity 65 mm (2.56 in). Machine weight approximately 7,500 kg (16,535 lb). New machines $220,000-$280,000. Competes with Nakamura-Tome WT-150 and Okuma TWIN STAR.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Twin-spindle, twin-turret architecture doubles throughput compared to single-spindle machines
  • Each spindle independently runs at 18.5 kW and 5,000 RPM for full turning performance
  • 24 total tool positions across two 12-station turrets handle most production part tooling needs
  • Symmetrical spindle layout simplifies maintenance with identical components on both sides
  • Automatic workpiece transfer enables rough-on-one, finish-on-the-other production workflows
  • Replaces two conventional lathes using less floor space and one operator instead of two

Limitations

  • No Y-axis limits all milling and drilling to on-center operations; off-center features require the W-200Y
  • 180 mm turning length restricts work to short chucking parts only
  • Programming dual-spindle synchronized operations requires experienced programmers
  • If one spindle goes down for service, production on both sides may be affected

Best For

High-volume production shops running 1,000+ piece lots of turning-dominant 8-inch chuck parts Automotive component manufacturers producing short turned parts like hubs, flanges, and bearing races Shops consolidating two single-spindle lathes into one machine for floor space and labor savings Production environments targeting 90%+ spindle utilization on high-volume turned parts Medical device manufacturers running high-volume implant and instrument components

Frequently Asked Questions

01 W-200 cost?

New W-200 starts around $220,000. With live tooling and full options runs $250K-$280K. The W-200Y with Y-axis adds approximately $30K-$50K.

02 W-200 vs W-200Y?

The W-200Y adds 100 mm (4 in) of Y-axis travel on both turrets for off-center milling and drilling. Choose W-200 for turning-dominant parts. Choose W-200Y when parts have off-center holes, flats, or keyways.

03 W-200 vs W-300?

The W-300 has 10-inch chucks with 16.93 inch max diameter and 8.86 inch turning length vs the W-200's 8-inch chucks with 12.6 inch diameter and 7.09 inch length. Choose based on part size.

04 Can both spindles run different parts?

Yes. Both spindle/turret units operate independently with separate programs. You can run different parts or operations simultaneously on each side.
