Overview
The Makino EDAF3-FH (Fine Hole) brings the dual sinker/drilling concept to the larger EDAF3 platform, combining full-capacity sinker EDM capability with precision hole drilling for shops handling medium-to-large mold inserts and die components. It's the bigger sibling of the EDAF2-FH, offering the same dual-mode versatility with substantially more travel, table capacity, and power.
The base platform matches the standard EDAF3: 450 x 350 x 350 mm (17.7 x 13.8 x 13.8 in) travel on X/Y/Z, a 700 x 500 mm (27.6 x 19.7 in) worktable rated for 800 kg (1,764 lb), and a three-sided programmable drop tank (850 x 650 x 400 mm internal). The larger travel and table allow drilling and burning operations on bigger workpieces that exceed the EDAF2-FH's capacity.
The removable W-axis die guide arm enables EDM hole drilling from 0.1 mm (0.004 in) to approximately 3 mm (0.118 in) diameter. The arm installs on precision reference surfaces, and the Hyper-i control switches between sinker and drilling technology settings. All drilling occurs in EDM dielectric oil rather than deionized water, maintaining hole edge quality and accuracy.
The MGH6 power supply delivers 40A peak current — 33% more than the EDAF2-FH's 30A — providing faster material removal during sinker operations on larger cavities. The standard 16-position ATC handles multi-electrode strategies, and the optional C-axis MA head (1,000 RPM) enables orbital burning. ArcFree technology, HyperCut, and SuperSpark IV all come standard.
Rapid traverse runs at 5,000 mm/min (197 ipm). Machine weight is approximately 5,700 kg (12,566 lb). The EDAF3-FH represents the most capable dual-purpose sinker/drill machine in Makino's lineup. New pricing typically ranges from $155,000 to $220,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Larger EDAF3 platform with 450 x 350 mm travel and 800 kg table handles medium-to-large mold inserts for dual sinker/drilling operations
- 40A peak current provides 33% more roughing power than the EDAF2-FH, enabling faster material removal on larger cavities
- Dual sinker/drilling capability on a single platform saves capital, floor space, and eliminates workpiece repositioning between machines
- Oil-based drilling improves hole edge quality and accuracy compared to water-based dedicated drill machines
- Full EDAF3 sinker technology retained — ArcFree, HyperCut, SuperSpark IV, 16-tool ATC, optional C-axis
- Three-sided drop tank accommodates both sinker and drilling operations with unrestricted workpiece access
Limitations
- FH option adds approximately $35,000-$45,000 over the base EDAF3 price, requiring sufficient drilling volume to justify the investment
- Maximum 3 mm hole diameter limits drilling to start holes and small cooling channels — larger holes require conventional drilling or separate EDM drill
- Switching between modes requires 5-10 minutes for arm installation/removal, adding setup time for frequent mode changes
- At 5,700 kg and larger footprint than the EDAF2-FH, floor space and installation requirements are more demanding
- Hole drilling speed is slower than dedicated high-speed EDM hole poppers for production-volume drilling applications

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New EDAF3-FH machines typically price between $155,000 and $220,000. The FH option adds approximately $35,000-$45,000 over the standard EDAF3 price. Used EDAF3-FH machines are relatively uncommon but trade between $60,000 and $100,000 for 2014-2020 vintages.
02
The EDAF3-FH offers larger travel (450/350/350 vs 350/250/250 mm), a bigger table (700 x 500 vs 500 x 350 mm), higher workpiece capacity (800 vs 500 kg), and a more powerful 40A power supply vs the EDAF2-FH's 30A. Both share the same hole drilling capability (0.1-3 mm). Choose the EDAF2-FH for smaller work; choose the EDAF3-FH for medium-to-large mold inserts and die components.
03
For many shops, yes — especially those that drill start holes for wire EDM and cooling channels in mold inserts. The EDAF3-FH handles holes from 0.1 to 3 mm diameter in any hardened material. However, for high-volume production drilling (hundreds of holes per day) or holes larger than 3 mm, a dedicated hole-drilling machine is still more productive. The EDAF3-FH is best for shops with moderate drilling volume alongside sinker EDM work.
04
The 40A MGH6 power supply enables faster roughing of larger cavities in sinker mode compared to the EDAF2-FH's 30A unit. In drilling mode, the higher available power supports faster material removal on larger-diameter holes (2-3 mm). The power supply is electronically controlled and scales down for fine finishing and micro-drilling automatically.
