Overview
The Makino EDNC-6 is the entry point of Makino's premium EDNC sinker EDM series, purpose-built for production mold and die shops that demand precision, repeatability, and automation capability. The EDNC platform represents Makino's most advanced sinker EDM technology, and the EDNC-6 packages it in a size class that handles the majority of precision mold work.
Axis travel measures 400 x 300 x 300 mm (15.7 x 11.8 x 11.8 in) on X/Y/Z, providing a versatile work envelope for small-to-medium mold cavities. The rigid cast-iron construction and precision ballscrew drives deliver positioning accuracy of ±0.001 mm (±0.00004 in), which is a meaningful step up from the EDGE series. The worktable handles workpieces up to 600 kg (1,323 lb).
The EDNC-6 runs Makino's HS-Rib power supply with up to 50A peak current, delivering aggressive roughing capability while maintaining the ability to produce mirror-quality surface finishes down to VDI 6 (Ra 0.15 µm). The HS-Rib generator uses high-speed switching technology to optimize spark energy distribution, reducing electrode wear while maximizing metal removal rates.
ArcFree technology provides real-time gap monitoring and DC arc prevention. The programmable three-sided drop tank provides excellent workpiece access. A standard 24-position ATC enables complex multi-electrode strategies essential for production environments running lights-out. The optional C-axis rotary head supports orbital burning and electrode rotation.
The Hyper-i control with SGF (Super Geometric Flushing) technology automatically optimizes flushing parameters based on cavity geometry. Machine weight is approximately 5,500 kg (12,125 lb). New pricing typically ranges from $200,000 to $280,000, positioning it as a serious production investment.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- HS-Rib generator with 50A peak current delivers excellent roughing speed while achieving VDI 6 mirror finishes on precision cavities
- ±0.001 mm positioning accuracy represents a significant precision upgrade over the EDGE series for critical mold work
- 24-position ATC enables complex multi-electrode production strategies for lights-out operation
- SGF (Super Geometric Flushing) automatically optimizes dielectric flushing based on cavity shape, improving burn consistency
- Rigid cast-iron construction provides the thermal and mechanical stability required for long-duration precision burns
- ArcFree technology and comprehensive monitoring make extended unattended production runs safe and reliable
Limitations
- Price premium over EDGE-series machines is substantial — shops need to justify the investment with production volume or precision requirements
- 400 x 300 mm X/Y travel may still be limiting for shops working with larger mold plates and die blocks
- 5,500 kg weight and larger footprint require proper foundation and adequate floor space
- Higher maintenance costs and service requirements compared to simpler EDGE-series machines
- 50A generator, while powerful for its size class, is still outpaced by larger EDNC machines for heavy roughing

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New Makino EDNC-6 machines typically price between $200,000 and $280,000. A base machine with 24-position ATC and Hyper-i control starts around $200,000. Adding the C-axis rotary head, enhanced dielectric temperature control, fire suppression, and automation interfaces pushes the price toward $250,000-$280,000. Used EDNC-6 machines are relatively rare but sell between $80,000 and $150,000 depending on vintage and condition.
02
The EDNC-6 represents a different class of machine. Key differences include the HS-Rib generator (50A vs 40A), tighter positioning accuracy (±0.001 mm vs ±0.002 mm), a 24-position ATC vs 20, and SGF flushing technology. The EDNC-6 achieves VDI 6 finishes vs VDI 10 on the EDGE3i. The EDNC platform is built for production precision; the EDGE series is built for value.
03
Yes, the EDNC-6 achieves mirror-quality finishes down to VDI 6 (Ra 0.15 µm) with proper electrode material and parameters. Copper electrodes with multiple finishing passes are typically required for the finest finishes. The HS-Rib generator's high-speed switching optimizes spark energy for minimal surface damage during finishing. These finishes are commonly required for optical mold cavities and reflector molds.
04
Both are premium sinker EDMs for precision mold work. The Sodick AQ55L uses linear motor drives for superior axis response, while the EDNC-6 uses precision ballscrew drives. Both achieve excellent surface finishes. The Makino's SGF flushing and ArcFree technology are competitive advantages, while Sodick's LN2W power supply excels at ultra-fine finishing. Price points are similar. The choice often depends on existing shop infrastructure and service support.
05
Yes, the EDNC-6 is designed for automation integration. The 24-position ATC handles electrode management, and the Hyper-i control supports communication with cell controllers and robotic systems. Makino offers the EDNC-6 as part of configured automation cells with robotic electrode and workpiece handling. The machine's programmable drop tank and automatic door option facilitate robotic access.
