Overview
The Makino EDNC10 is a large-format sinker EDM machine designed for the most demanding die and mold applications where workpiece size, electrode complexity, and surface quality requirements exceed the capacity of mid-size EDM platforms. With a 1,500 x 1,100 mm (59.1 x 43.3 in) table and X/Y/Z travel of 1,000 x 700 x 450 mm (39.4 x 27.6 x 17.7 in), the EDNC10 accommodates the largest die blocks and mold bases in automotive, aerospace, and heavy industrial tooling.
Makino's HyperCut EDM generator drives the spark gap, delivering high material removal rates in roughing while achieving mirror-quality Ra 0.05 micron surfaces in fine-finish mode. The generator's sophisticated pulse control algorithms manage the transition from aggressive roughing to mirror-quality finishing without electrode or workpiece changes.
Maximum electrode weight is 250 kg (551 lb) with a C-axis rotation option for indexing electrodes without removal from the machine. Makino's orbiting system enables complex cavity creation from single electrodes by translating the electrode in X/Y patterns during burning. Z-axis jump motion frequency and amplitude are programmable to optimize chip flushing in deep cavity work.
Positioning accuracy is +/-0.003 mm (0.00012 in) with 0.1 micron resolution on the Pro 6 control displays. Makino's EDM Intelligent Expert System (EIEX) automatically optimizes generator parameters based on cavity area, electrode material, workpiece material, and target surface finish. The EDNC10 competes with Mitsubishi EA28, Sodick ALH Series, and Charmilles Form 2000 in the large sinker EDM segment.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1,500 x 1,100 mm table handles the largest die blocks and mold bases in automotive and industrial tooling without workpiece repositioning
- 5,000 kg table load capacity accommodates the heaviest steel die blocks and assembled mold components
- HyperCut generator achieves Ra 0.05 micron mirror finish, eliminating hand polishing on critical cavity surfaces
- EIEX intelligent expert system automatically optimizes EDM parameters, reducing setup time and operator skill requirements for new applications
- 250 kg electrode capacity handles the largest graphite and copper electrode sets required for large cavity work
- Pro 6 control shared with Makino VMC line; shops running Makino VMCs and EDMs benefit from consistent operator interface
Limitations
- Large machine footprint and 12,000 kg weight require an engineered foundation and significant floor space allocation
- High price range requires sustained large-cavity EDM work to justify versus mid-size alternatives
- Dielectric oil management at this scale requires dedicated filtration, fire suppression, and oil storage infrastructure
- Electrode preparation requires a dedicated electrode milling machine; at this size, electrode cost and lead time add to project timelines
- Large-format EDM burning times can be very long (10-100+ hours per cavity); skilled process planning is critical to economical production

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new Makino EDNC10 typically ranges from $300,000 to $600,000. A base machine configuration starts around $300,000-$380,000. Options including C-axis electrode rotation, enhanced flushing systems, automatic electrode changer, oil mist collector, and fire suppression enhancements can bring a fully equipped machine to $500,000-$600,000. Installation including electrical service, dielectric oil system, and fire suppression infrastructure adds to total project cost.
02
The EDNC10 is compatible with both graphite and copper electrodes. Graphite is the most common choice for large cavities due to easier machinability, lighter weight (important at the 250 kg electrode capacity limit), and low electrode wear in fine-finish EDM. Copper electrodes are preferred for very fine features and applications requiring the lowest surface finish values, but are heavier, slower to machine, and more expensive.
03
The EDNC10 covers a wide surface finish range: Ra 3.0 micron (VDI 30) in roughing mode; Ra 0.2 micron (VDI 12) in medium finishing; Ra 0.1 micron (VDI 6) in fine finishing; and Ra 0.05 micron in optimized mirror-finish mode with appropriate electrode condition and dielectric cleanliness. Mirror finish eliminates hand polishing from the mold production workflow.
04
EIEX (EDM Intelligent Expert System) is Makino's AI-based generator parameter optimization system. The operator inputs electrode material, workpiece material, electrode surface area, and target surface finish. EIEX selects starting generator parameters from an optimized database and adapts them in real time based on gap voltage feedback, arc detection, and material removal rate monitoring. This reduces setup expertise required for new applications and consistently delivers near-optimal results from the first burn.
05
Both are large sinker EDM machines in the same market segment. The Mitsubishi EA28 offers a comparable work area with Mitsubishi's Fine Pulse generator and SVC control. Both machines achieve similar surface finish ranges. The choice often comes down to distributor support quality, existing tooling and electrode standards, and operator familiarity. Makino's Pro 6 control shared with the VMC line benefits shops running both Makino VMCs and EDMs, enabling single-platform operator training.
