Overview

The Koike Aronson MasterGraph Katana MGK is the MasterGraph gantry with Koike's own Katana control in place of a third-party CNC. It is listed as the MGK 2500, MGK 3100 and MGK 3700, with 96 in (2,438 mm) to 144 in (3,658 mm) of effective cutting width when 5 slave stations are fitted, and is offered with a 460 amp XPR plasma system.

The automation of the torch stations is what marks out the MGK. The slave carriage band clamp is pneumatic, with air cylinders that position and space up to 8 oxy-fuel and plasma torches automatically. Three oxy-fuel systems are listed: Hi-Lo, Koike's Autogas, and the IHT system with automatic process control. With Autogas the operator selects tip size and plate thickness and the gas pressures are set from the Katana CNC.

Capacity figures are close to the MasterGraph EX2. Rapid traverse is 1,400 ipm (35.6 m/min), maximum contour speed 600 ipm (15.2 m/min), and the oxy-fuel gas systems are rated for 10 in (254 mm) of thickness. The MGK lists up to 10 tools and 8 slave stations, one more of each than the EX2, with 8 oxy-fuel stations and 2 plasma or marker stations.

For beveling, the optional 3D-X Full Contour Bevel Head performs A, V, X, Y and K bevels, and Koike states that the drives and gearboxes give enough torque to countersink holes with it. The torch height control has a programmable lifter speed of 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min). Machine voltage is 208-240 VAC 3-phase at 30 AMP, where the MasterGraph EX2 is a 480 VAC machine, so check the building supply before choosing between them.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Pneumatic band clamp auto-positions and spaces up to 8 oxy-fuel and plasma torches
  • Katana control with remote diagnostics; Autogas sets gas pressures from tip size and plate thickness
  • Up to 10 tools and 8 slave stations
  • Optional 3D-X Full Contour Bevel Head for A, V, X, Y and K bevels and countersinking
  • 1,400 ipm (35.6 m/min) rapid traverse and 600 ipm (15.2 m/min) maximum contour speed

Limitations

  • Narrowest model is the MGK 2500 with 96 in (2,438 mm) of effective cutting width at 5 slave stations; the MasterGraph EX2 goes down to 60 in (1,524 mm)
  • Plasma or marker stations are limited to 2
  • The contour bevel head, IHT system and Autogas are options to specify
  • Machine voltage is 208-240 VAC 3-phase; the MasterGraph EX2 is the 480 VAC machine of the two

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does Katana mean on the MasterGraph Katana MGK?

Katana is Koike's own CNC. On this machine it is the listed machine CNC, with ProNest software, and it also runs the Autogas system: the operator selects tip size and plate thickness and the gas pressures are adjusted from the control. Remote diagnostics and servicing are part of it.

02 What sizes is the MGK built in?

Three: the MGK 2500, MGK 3100 and MGK 3700. With 5 slave stations the effective cutting widths are 96 in (2,438 mm), 120 in (3,048 mm) and 144 in (3,658 mm); with 2 slave stations they are 120 in (3,048 mm), 144 in (3,658 mm) and 168 in (4,267 mm). Effective cutting length is 250 in (6,350 mm) and expandable.

03 How many torches can the MGK carry?

The table lists a maximum of 10 tools, 8 slave stations, 8 oxy-fuel stations and 2 plasma or marker stations. The pneumatic band clamp positions and spaces up to 8 oxy-fuel and plasma torches automatically.

04 Which oxy-fuel systems are offered?

Hi-Lo, Autogas and the IHT system with automatic process control, all listed under a 10 in (254 mm) maximum thickness. The standard oxy-fuel station uses a motorized lifter with a 6-inch (150 mm) stroke, and all stations are controlled from the operator console.

05 What power supply does the MGK need?

The machine voltage is 208-240 VAC 3-phase at 30 AMP. The plasma system is a separate load, and a 460 amp source needs its own service. The MasterGraph EX2, by comparison, is listed at 480 VAC 3-phase at 30 AMP.
