Overview

With the HiFocus 280i neo, Kjellberg's HiFocus neo range moves into its large cabinet. It is a 280 A plasma power source for mechanised cutting, with a cutting range of 0.5 - 70 mm (0.02 - 2.8 in) and a current range of 10 - 280 A. This is also the size from which the series brochure lists bevel cutting and underwater plasma cutting, and an underwater version of the unit is an option.

Read the 70 mm figure as the limit, not as the working range. Kjellberg recommends 0.5 - 50 mm (0.02 - 2.0 in), and piercing is listed up to 40 mm (1.6 in). A shop that mostly cuts plate of 40 mm and under can pierce everything it cuts; between 40 mm and 70 mm the cut starts at an edge.

What sets this unit apart from the HiFocus 161i neo is more than current. The plasma gas row adds F5 to O2, N2, Air, Ar and H2, the marking current widens to 5 - 50 A, the torch is the PerCut 451, and HotWire for interrupted structures or nonconductive materials appears as an option. Silent Cut is listed for mild steel and reduces the sound pressure level by up to 15 dB(A) at currents between 60 and 160 A.

Plan the installation around 422 kg (930 lb) and a footprint of 1030 x 680 x 1450 mm. The supply is 3x 400 V, 50 Hz on a 100 A slow fuse with a connected load of max. 67 kVA. Duty cycle is 100 % at an ambient temperature of 40 °C.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 280 A cutting current at a 100 % duty cycle, with a current range of 10 - 280 A for thin sheet through plate
  • Piercing up to 40 mm (1.6 in) and a recommended cutting range of 0.5 - 50 mm (0.02 - 2.0 in)
  • Optionally available as a version for underwater cutting
  • Silent Cut reduces the sound pressure level by up to 15 dB(A) at currents between 60 and 160 A
  • Plasma gases include F5 alongside O2, N2, Air, Ar and H2
  • HotWire is available as an option for interrupted structures or nonconductive materials

Limitations

  • The recommended range stops at 50 mm; the upper part of the 70 mm cutting range is outside it
  • Piercing ends at 40 mm, so thicker plate needs an edge start
  • At 422 kg it is roughly twice the weight of the HiFocus 161i neo, which weighs 206 kg
  • Underwater cutting and HotWire are options, not part of the standard unit

Best For

Steel service centers cutting plate inside the 0.5 - 50 mm recommended range Underwater plasma cutting with the optional underwater version Mild steel work where Silent Cut noise reduction between 60 and 160 A matters Tables that both cut and mark, using the 5 - 50 A marking current

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the cutting range of the HiFocus 280i neo?

Kjellberg states a cutting range from 0.5 mm to 70 mm. The series brochure adds a recommended range of 0.5 - 50 mm, and piercing is listed up to 40 mm. For plate above the piercing figure the cut has to begin at an edge.

02 Can the HiFocus 280i neo cut underwater?

An underwater version is optional: Kjellberg states that the HiFocus 280i neo is available as a version for underwater cutting. The series brochure lists bevel cutting and underwater plasma cutting from this model upward, so it is the smallest HiFocus neo unit for that work.

03 What does Silent Cut do on the HiFocus 280i neo?

Silent Cut is a development of Contour Cut for mild steel. Kjellberg states that it reduces the sound pressure level by up to 15 dB(A) during cutting with currents between 60 and 160 A. Above that current band the statement does not apply.

04 What electrical connection does the HiFocus 280i neo need?

Mains voltage is 3x 400 V, 50 Hz, the slow fuse is 100 A and the connected load is max. 67 kVA. Other voltages and frequencies are available upon request. The cabinet measures 1030 x 680 x 1450 mm and weighs 422 kg.
