Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Kiwa KH-55 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Kiwa KH-55 is a 50-taper horizontal machining center with 800 mm (31.5 in) of travel on X, Y and Z, a 500 x 500 mm (19.7 x 19.7 in) pallet and a built-in spindle that runs to 10,000 min-1. Among the Kiwa horizontals it stands beside, this is the one with a BT 50 spindle. The KH-5800kai covers the same X and Y travel with a BT40 taper.
The larger taper is the reason to choose it. A 50-taper holder carries bigger cutters and longer boring bars with a stiffer joint than a smaller taper gives, which is what heavy roughing in steel and cast iron asks for. Kiwa also lists a 6,000 min-1 built-in spindle as an option. A slower spindle is normally picked for low-speed torque, but the table gives no power or torque figure for either one, so ask for both curves before deciding.
Rapid traverse is 60,000 mm/min (2,362 ipm), against 80,000 mm/min (3,150 ipm) on the KH-5800kai. That matters least on long roughing cuts, where rapid moves are a small part of the cycle. The guideway row lists a hybrid guide as an option and does not describe the standard guideway, so ask what the option changes.
The maximum workpiece is Ø900 x 1,000 mm (Ø35.4 x 39.4 in). Both dimensions are larger than the 800 mm (31.5 in) strokes, so check that the features on a part near the limit fall inside the travel. A 630 x 630 mm (24.8 x 24.8 in) pallet is optional. Two pallets are standard, with single-pallet and 6-pallet versions listed.
The magazine holds 40 tools as standard, with 60, 120 and 240 as options, and the control is the FANUC 31i. Floor space is 5,683 x 3,006 mm (223.7 x 118.3 in) for the two-pallet machine with the 40-tool magazine and 6,168 x 3,091 mm (242.8 x 121.7 in) with 120 tools, both excluding the chip conveyor.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- BT 50 spindle taper, with CAT 50 optional, for large cutters and long boring tools
- 800 mm (31.5 in) of travel on each of X, Y and Z
- Workpieces up to Ø900 x 1,000 mm (Ø35.4 x 39.4 in), with an optional 630 x 630 mm (24.8 x 24.8 in) pallet
- 10,000 min-1 built-in spindle as standard, with a 6,000 min-1 built-in spindle as the listed alternative
- Magazine options of 60, 120 and 240 tools above the standard 40
- Available with a single pallet, the standard 2 pallets or 6 pallets
Limitations
- Rapid traverse is 60,000 mm/min (2,362 ipm); the 40-taper KH-5800kai lists 80,000 mm/min (3,150 ipm)
- Floor space starts at 5,683 x 3,006 mm (223.7 x 118.3 in) before the chip conveyor and grows to 6,168 x 3,091 mm (242.8 x 121.7 in) with the 120-tool magazine
- Spindle speed stops at 10,000 min-1, which holds back small-diameter tools; the KH-5800kai lists 15,000 and 20,000 min-1 options
- The hybrid guide, the 630 x 630 mm (24.8 x 24.8 in) pallet and the larger magazines are options and not part of the standard machine

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A built-in spindle with a BT 50 taper that runs to 10,000 min-1. CAT 50 is the optional taper, and a 6,000 min-1 built-in spindle is the optional alternative. The listed rows include no power or torque values, so compare the two spindles on Kiwa's curves and not on speed alone.
02
Taper and pace. The KH-55 has a BT 50 built-in spindle at 10,000 min-1 and rapids of 60,000 mm/min (2,362 ipm). The KH-5800kai has a BT40 direct-drive spindle at 12,000 min-1 and rapids of 80,000 mm/min (3,150 ipm). Both travel 800 mm (31.5 in) in X and Y; the KH-5800kai has 850 mm in Z against 800 mm here. Both use a 500 x 500 mm (19.7 x 19.7 in) standard pallet and offer 40, 60, 120 or 240 tools.
03
The standard pallet is 500 x 500 mm (19.7 x 19.7 in) and a 630 x 630 mm (24.8 x 24.8 in) pallet is optional. Two pallets are standard. Kiwa also lists a single-pallet machine and a 6-pallet configuration. The maximum workpiece is Ø900 x 1,000 mm (Ø35.4 x 39.4 in).
04
With two pallets and the 40-tool magazine, 5,683 x 3,006 mm (223.7 x 118.3 in). With two pallets and the 120-tool magazine, 6,168 x 3,091 mm (242.8 x 121.7 in). Both figures exclude the chip conveyor, and the table gives no footprint for the 60 or 240 tool magazines or for the 6-pallet system.
05
Kiwa's guideway row for this model lists a hybrid guide as an option. The table goes no further: it does not describe the construction of the hybrid guide or name the standard guideway. Ask Kiwa what the option changes and on which axes before putting it on the order.
