Overview

The Kiwa KH-4100kai is a compact two-pallet horizontal machining center with a 400 x 400 mm (15.7 x 15.7 in) pallet, 510 mm (20.1 in) of travel on each of X, Y and Z, and a 40-taper direct-drive spindle that runs to 12,000 min-1. The figures that set it apart are about space and motion more than capacity. The machine is 1,530 mm (60.2 in) wide, narrower than the KH-4200kai at 1,620 mm (63.8 in), and its linear axes accelerate at 1 G.

Floor space is 1,701 x 4,078 mm (67.0 x 160.1 in) including the coolant tank but not a chip conveyor. A plan that long and narrow lets several machines stand side by side along a short stretch of floor. Allow extra room for whichever chip conveyor is ordered, since the listed footprint leaves it out.

Rapid traverse is 80,000 mm/min (3,150 ipm) on X, Y and Z. With only 510 mm (20.1 in) to cover on any axis, few moves last long enough to reach that speed, so the 1 G acceleration matters more to cycle time than the rapid rate does. The B axis turns at 37 min-1. On parts with many short positioning moves and frequent face changes, those two figures decide how much of the cycle is spent out of the cut.

The maximum workpiece is Ø550 x 850 mm (Ø21.7 x 33.5 in), which is wider than the pallet and taller than the Y travel. A fixture can overhang the pallet and stand higher than the spindle can climb, so check where the machined features sit within the Y stroke before designing a tall tombstone.

Kiwa lists BT 40 as the standard taper with CAT 40 as an option, and a 15,000 min-1 direct-drive spindle as the upgrade from 12,000 min-1. The magazine holds 40 tools, or 60 as an option, and the control is the FANUC 0iMF Plus. If 20,000 min-1, an HSK-A63 taper or a FANUC 31i-B Plus control is on the requirement list, the KH-4200kai is the model that lists them as options.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,530 mm (60.2 in) machine width, and a 1,701 x 4,078 mm (67.0 x 160.1 in) floor space that already includes the coolant tank
  • 1 G acceleration on X, Y and Z with 80,000 mm/min (3,150 ipm) rapids, which pays off on the short moves a 510 mm (20.1 in) stroke produces
  • Two 400 x 400 mm (15.7 x 15.7 in) pallets as standard, so one pallet can be loaded while the other is being machined
  • 12,000 min-1 direct-drive spindle as standard, with a 15,000 min-1 direct-drive spindle as an option
  • Takes workpieces up to Ø550 x 850 mm (Ø21.7 x 33.5 in), larger than the pallet itself
  • 40-tool magazine as standard and 60 tools as an option

Limitations

  • Travel is 510 mm (20.1 in) on every axis, which caps the size of any feature pattern that must be reached in one clamping
  • Spindle options stop at 15,000 min-1 and the taper choice at BT 40 or CAT 40; the KH-4200kai lists a 20,000 min-1 built-in spindle and HSK-A63 as options
  • Tool capacity tops out at 60, and only as an option; the KH-4500kai lists magazines of 120 and 240 tools
  • Kiwa lists two pallets and no larger pallet pool for this model, where the KH-4200kai lists an optional 5
  • The 1,701 x 4,078 mm (67.0 x 160.1 in) floor space excludes the chip conveyor, so the installed footprint is larger than listed

Best For

Small prismatic parts that fit a 400 x 400 mm (15.7 x 15.7 in) pallet Rows of horizontals where 1,530 mm (60.2 in) of width per machine counts Short-stroke cycles with many positioning moves, which gain from 1 G acceleration Two-pallet production with loading during the cut 40-taper work at 12,000 min-1, or 15,000 min-1 with the optional spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels and pallet size of the Kiwa KH-4100kai?

X, Y and Z each travel 510 mm (20.1 in). The machine carries two 400 x 400 mm (15.7 x 15.7 in) pallets, and the largest workpiece Kiwa lists is Ø550 x 850 mm (Ø21.7 x 33.5 in). Because that height exceeds the Y travel, confirm that the features on a tall part fall inside the stroke.

02 How much floor space does the KH-4100kai need?

Kiwa lists 1,701 x 4,078 mm (67.0 x 160.1 in), a figure that includes the coolant tank and excludes the chip conveyor. The machine itself is 1,530 mm (60.2 in) wide. Add the conveyor you intend to order, plus access for loading the pallets and for maintenance, when laying out the cell.

03 Which spindle and taper options are listed for the KH-4100kai?

The standard spindle is a 12,000 min-1 direct-drive unit with a BT 40 taper. The listed options are a 15,000 min-1 direct-drive spindle and a CAT 40 taper. No built-in spindle and no HSK taper appear in the table for this model.

04 How does the KH-4100kai differ from the KH-4200kai?

Both use a 400 x 400 mm (15.7 x 15.7 in) pallet. The KH-4200kai travels 560 x 660 x 560 mm against 510 mm on every axis of the KH-4100kai, and the KH-4200kai rapids at 90,000 mm/min (3,543 ipm) against 80,000 mm/min (3,150 ipm). The KH-4200kai also carries 60 tools as standard and lists a 20,000 min-1 built-in spindle and HSK-A63 as options. The KH-4100kai is the narrower machine: 1,530 mm (60.2 in) wide against 1,620 mm (63.8 in) for the KH-4200kai.

05 How fast do the axes move on the KH-4100kai?

Rapid traverse is 80,000 mm/min (3,150 ipm) on X, Y and Z with 1 G acceleration, and the B axis rotates at 37 min-1. On a machine with 510 mm (20.1 in) strokes the acceleration figure does most of the work, because short moves spend their time speeding up and slowing down.
