Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Kiwa KH-4500 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Kiwa KH-4500 is a 40-taper horizontal machining center with a two-pallet changer, 400 x 400 mm (15.7 x 15.7 in) pallets and standard travels of 640 mm (25.2 in) in X, 610 mm (24.0 in) in Y and 680 mm (26.8 in) in Z. Kiwa calls the KH-4500kai the latest generation of this model and still lists both.
Stroke is the first thing to compare between the two. The KH-4500kai is listed with 700 mm (27.6 in) of X and 740 mm (29.1 in) of Y. Here those same figures are the optional stroke, and the standard machine is shorter in both axes. Z is 680 mm (26.8 in) either way. The taper is BT 40 with CAT 40 as the option; the KH-4500kai also lists HSK-A63, which this table does not.
Kiwa builds the bed and column in a stepped layout and cools the ballscrews, which is how a machine of this size is given rapids of 80,000 mm/min (3,150 ipm). The B axis uses a ball drive system and indexes at 66.6 min-1. Short cycle times on multi-face parts depend on that B-axis figure as much as on the linear rapids.
How big a part fits depends on the pallet system. With the standard two pallets the limit is Ø750 x 1,000 mm (Ø29.5 x 39.4 in). The six-pallet changer keeps the diameter and lowers the height to 900 mm (35.4 in), and the eight-pallet changer allows Ø650 x 900 mm (Ø25.6 x 35.4 in). Kiwa states that the pallet changer and the tool magazine are expandable and field installable, so the pallet count and the 40-tool magazine chosen at purchase are not final. Magazine options are 60, 120 and 240 tools.
The standard spindle is a 10,000 min-1 direct-drive unit. Floor space is 2,627 x 4,592 mm (103.4 x 180.8 in) including the coolant tank, without the chip conveyor.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Rapids of 80,000 mm/min (3,150 ipm) on X, Y and Z with cooled ballscrews, and a B axis that turns at 66.6 min-1
- Pallet changer and tool magazine are expandable and field installable, per Kiwa's own description
- Workpieces up to Ø750 x 1,000 mm (Ø29.5 x 39.4 in) on the standard two-pallet machine
- Spindle options run from the standard 10,000 min-1 direct drive to a 20,000 min-1 built-in unit
- Magazine sizes of 60, 120 and 240 tools above the standard 40
- The listed floor space of 2,627 x 4,592 mm (103.4 x 180.8 in) already includes the coolant tank
Limitations
- Standard X and Y travel are 640 mm (25.2 in) and 610 mm (24.0 in); the 700 mm and 740 mm strokes are an option
- The eight-pallet changer cuts the workpiece limit to Ø650 x 900 mm (Ø25.6 x 35.4 in)
- Taper choices are BT 40 or CAT 40 only; no HSK interface is listed
- No spindle power, torque or pallet load figure appears among the listed rows

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Kiwa describes the KH-4500kai as the latest generation of the KH-4500. In the listed figures the KH-4500kai has 700 mm (27.6 in) of X and 740 mm (29.1 in) of Y travel, while the KH-4500 has 640 mm (25.2 in) and 610 mm (24.0 in) as standard with the longer stroke as an option. Both have 680 mm (26.8 in) of Z, 80,000 mm/min (3,150 ipm) rapids and a 10,000 min-1 standard spindle.
02
On the standard two-pallet machine the maximum workpiece is Ø750 x 1,000 mm (Ø29.5 x 39.4 in). With the six-pallet changer it is Ø750 x 900 mm (Ø29.5 x 35.4 in), and with eight pallets Ø650 x 900 mm (Ø25.6 x 35.4 in). The pallet is 400 x 400 mm (15.7 x 15.7 in), or 500 x 500 mm (19.7 x 19.7 in) as an option. No pallet load is listed, so ask for it.
03
Kiwa states that the APC and the ATC are expandable and field installable. The table lists a single pallet, six pallets and eight pallets as alternatives to the standard two, and magazines of 60, 120 and 240 tools above the standard 40. What an upgrade involves on a given machine is something to confirm with Kiwa before ordering.
04
The standard spindle is a 10,000 min-1 direct-drive unit. The options are 12,000 min-1 and 15,000 min-1, both direct drive, and a 20,000 min-1 built-in spindle. The tool shank is BT 40, with CAT 40 optional. Power and torque are not among the listed rows.
05
Kiwa lists 2,627 x 4,592 mm (103.4 x 180.8 in). That figure includes the coolant tank and leaves out the chip conveyor, so allow for the conveyor and its discharge side. The table gives one figure only and does not say how the six- or eight-pallet changers or the larger magazines change it.
