Overview
The Hyundai-WIA HD2200 is a heavy-duty horizontal turning center designed for high-power, high-rigidity machining of medium to large parts. Built on a 45-degree slant bed with a swing over bed of 720 mm (28.3 in) and maximum turning diameter of 640 mm (25.2 in), it handles automotive axle shafts, oil and gas components, heavy equipment parts, and general job shop work.
The cartridge-type spindle is driven by a 30 kW (40 HP) motor delivering approximately 716 Nm torque. Spindle bore is 91 mm (3.58 in) for bar stock up to 80 mm. Maximum speed is 3,500 RPM. The spindle nose is A2-8 with a standard 254 mm (10 in) chuck.
The one-piece cast iron bed uses hand-scraped box ways on both X and Z axes, providing superior vibration damping for heavy, interrupted cuts. The servo-driven 12-station drum turret indexes in approximately 0.2 seconds. Live tooling with C-axis is available as an option.
The Fanuc 0i-TF Plus control supports conversational programming via Manual Guide i. Rapid traverse is 20 m/min on X and 24 m/min on Z. Machine weight is 5,500 kg.
New HD2200 machines price $85,000-$130,000, positioning it as a strong value play against Doosan Puma 2600, Mazak Quick Turn 250, and Okuma LB3000. Korean manufacturing keeps pricing competitive while delivering comparable build quality.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 30 kW spindle with 716 Nm torque for aggressive roughing on tough materials
- Box way construction provides superior vibration damping for heavy interrupted cuts
- 91 mm spindle bore accommodates large bar stock and through-spindle workholding
- Competitive pricing 20-30% below equivalent Japanese OEMs
- Fanuc 0i-TF Plus is industry standard with broad operator familiarity
- 12-station turret with optional live tooling and C-axis for done-in-one operations
Limitations
- Box ways require periodic adjustment and re-scraping over time
- 3,500 RPM max spindle speed limits surface speed on small-diameter finishing
- Hyundai-WIA North American service network is smaller than major competitors
- Heavy-duty design may be excessive for shops doing primarily light-duty turning
- Bar feeder compatibility should be verified before purchase
