Overview

The Hwacheon UPR-600B is a long-bed, low-speed lathe that turns Ø600 mm (Ø23.6 in) work up to 3,000 mm (118.1 in) between centres, with a linear-motor feed drive. Its spec table is unusual for a lathe in this size class: a minimum turning diameter of Ø180 mm (Ø7.1 in), a spindle speed of 1 ~ 300 rpm in three automatic steps, and a manual V4 tool post with 4 tool faces instead of a turret. Taken together, these point at long cylindrical parts of fairly constant, larger diameter rather than general job-shop turning.

The spindle is a built-in motor rated 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 24.8 hp) on an A2-8 nose with a 14 in chuck. Bearings are grease-lubricated and the spindle is jacket-cooled from an oil cooler, which helps keep the headstock stable over long cuts. Workpiece weight is 1,500 kg (3,307 lb).

X travel is 280 mm (11.0 in) and Z travel 3,000 mm (118.1 in), with rapids of 15 / 20 m/min (591 / 787 ipm). The tool post takes ☐20 mm shanks, or ☐30 mm as an option. With only 4 tool faces and a manual post, each setup should be planned around few tools.

The Hi-TECH 650 offers the same Ø600 mm (Ø23.6 in) turning diameter with a 12-station turret and up to 2,000 rpm, so it is the general-purpose alternative; the UPR-600B trades that flexibility for its linear-motor drive and low-speed spindle. The machine weighs 15,000 kg (33,069 lb), occupies 6,000 x 2,810 mm (236.2 x 110.6 in) of floor at a height of 2,370 mm (93.3 in), and uses a FANUC 31i-B control.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Linear motor feed drive, with rapids of 15 / 20 m/min (591 / 787 ipm)
  • 3,000 mm (118.1 in) between centres for Ø600 mm (Ø23.6 in) work
  • Built-in spindle motor of 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 24.8 hp) with jacket cooling from an oil cooler
  • Takes workpieces up to 1,500 kg (3,307 lb)
  • Grease-lubricated spindle bearings and a FANUC 31i-B control, with a 14 in chuck on an A2-8 nose

Limitations

  • Spindle speed is limited to 1 ~ 300 rpm, which rules out efficient work on small diameters
  • Minimum turning diameter is Ø180 mm (Ø7.1 in)
  • Manual V4 tool post with 4 tool faces, no turret
  • X travel of 280 mm (11.0 in) and ☐20 mm standard shanks limit heavy or deep facing work
06

Best For

Long cylindrical parts between Ø180 mm and Ø600 mm Workpieces up to 3,000 mm (118.1 in) long and 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) Long cuts with few tool changes Low-speed finishing of large diameters

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What diameter range does the UPR-600B cover?

From Ø180 mm (Ø7.1 in) up to Ø600 mm (Ø23.6 in). The minimum is part of the specification, so parts with sections smaller than Ø180 mm need another machine or a check with the maker before ordering.

02 Why does the UPR-600B have a manual tool post instead of a turret?

The table lists a manual V4 tool post with 4 tool faces taking ☐20 mm shanks (☐30 mm optional). That setup suits long passes with a few tools on large cylindrical parts. For work that needs many tools, the Hi-TECH 650 has a 12-station turret at the same Ø600 mm (Ø23.6 in) turning diameter.

03 How fast does the spindle turn?

1 ~ 300 rpm over three automatic steps, from a built-in 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 24.8 hp) motor on an A2-8 nose with a 14 in chuck. Bearings are grease-lubricated and the spindle is jacket-cooled by an oil cooler.

04 What travels and rapids does it have?

X travel is 280 mm (11.0 in) and Z travel 3,000 mm (118.1 in). Rapids are 15 m/min (591 ipm) on X and 20 m/min (787 ipm) on Z, and the feed drive is a linear motor rather than a ball screw.
