Overview

The Haas ST-45LY combines the large-bore spindle of the ST-45 with an extended long-bed Z-axis and Y-axis milling capability. With a 178 mm (7.0 in) spindle bore, A2-11 spindle nose, and 2,032 mm (80 in) of Z-axis travel, the ST-45LY is purpose-built for long tubular work, pipe fittings, and extended hollow components that need cross-holes, flats, and milled features.

The 29.8 kW (40 hp) spindle drives through a 2-speed gearbox, producing 1,898 Nm (1,400 ft-lb) of torque at 150 RPM. Max spindle speed is 1,400 RPM, lower than the ST-40 due to the larger-diameter spindle assembly and heavier 457 mm (18 in) chuck. An optional XP high-performance spindle bumps output to 41.0 kW (55 hp) and 2,847 Nm (2,100 ft-lb) for heavy roughing.

The BMT75 turret provides 12 stations of live tooling at 4,000 RPM with 5.6 kW (7.5 hp). Y-axis travel of 102 mm (4.0 in) total enables cross-drilling, milling flats, and off-center feature work on long pipe and tubular components. C-axis positioning resolves to 0.01 degrees.

The combination of 7-inch bore, 80-inch Z-travel, and Y-axis milling makes the ST-45LY unique. It handles complete processing of long pipe, casing, and tubular work that would otherwise require multiple machines and setups. Thread the bore, turn the OD, mill cross-holes, and cut bolt patterns all in one clamping.

At $265,000-$330,000 configured, the ST-45LY targets oil and gas, pipeline, valve manufacturing, and heavy industrial shops where long tubular work with milled features dominates the workload. Specs derived from Haas Automation published ST-45 and ST-40Y data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 7.0-inch spindle bore with 80-inch Z-travel handles long tubular and pipe work that no other Haas Y-axis lathe can accept
  • BMT75 turret with 7.5 hp live tooling and Y-axis enables milling cross-holes and features on long pipe and tubular components
  • 40 hp spindle with 1,400 ft-lb of torque provides ample power for heavy material removal on large-diameter pipe and casing
  • 18-inch chuck on A2-11 nose securely clamps large-bore tubular workpieces for both turning and milling operations
  • Complete processing of long tubular parts in one setup eliminates multiple machine handling and improves accuracy
  • Optional XP spindle upgrade to 55 hp and 2,100 ft-lb for the most demanding oil and gas applications

Limitations

  • 1,400 RPM max spindle speed limits surface speed on smaller-diameter work and aluminum finishing
  • Machine weight approaching 12,700 kg requires heavy-duty foundation and professional rigging
  • At $265-330K, this is a significant capital investment for specialized large-bore long-bed work
  • 18-inch chuck and large spindle assembly result in longer acceleration and deceleration times

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas ST-45LY cost?

Base price starts around $265,000. Configured with XP spindle, tailstock, chip conveyor, high-pressure coolant, and steady rests, expect $300,000-$330,000. The long-bed Y-axis premium over the base ST-45 is approximately $75,000-$85,000.

02 What is the difference between the ST-45LY and the ST-40LY?

The ST-45LY has a 178 mm (7.0 in) spindle bore with an A2-11 nose and 18-inch chuck, while the ST-40LY has a 117.3 mm (4.62 in) bore with A2-8 and 15-inch chuck. The ST-45LY runs a lower 1,400 RPM max speed. Z-travel and Y-axis specs are identical. Choose the ST-45LY when large through-bore capacity is required.

03 Can the ST-45LY thread large-bore pipe?

Yes. The C-axis, live tooling, and large bore make the ST-45LY well-suited for threading operations on pipe and casing. The 7-inch bore passes pipe stock through the spindle for efficient threading, and the 80-inch Z-travel handles extended pipe lengths.

04 What floor requirements does the ST-45LY need?

At approximately 12,700 kg (28,000 lb), the ST-45LY requires a minimum 12-inch reinforced concrete slab with rebar. Consult your Haas HFO dealer for specific foundation drawings. Professional rigging with a crane rated for the machine weight is essential.
