Haas ST-10L

The Haas ST-10L doubles the bed of the ST-10: 32.5 in (826 mm) of Z travel and turning length where the ST-10 has 16 in (406 mm), with the same 6.5 in (165 mm) chuck and 6,000 rpm, 15 hp (11.2 kW) spindle. It is a long, light lathe, and the question to ask of it is whether a small spindle and a long bed match your parts.

They match when the parts are slender. Bar capacity is 1.75 in (44 mm), and a part that fills both the bar capacity and the turning length is more than eighteen times as long as it is thick. Work like that cannot be cut unsupported. The table lists a tailstock with an MT3 taper, 44 in (1,118 mm) of manual body positioning and a hydraulic quill with 3.8 in (95 mm) of travel, whose thrust adjusts from 140 lbf (623 N) to 1,130 lbf (5,026 N). The low end of that range matters here, because a thin shaft bows if the centre pushes too hard.

The spindle is tuned for speed. It makes 75 ft-lbf (102 N·m) at 1,300 rpm and runs to 6,000 rpm on an A2-5 nose with a 2.31 in (58.7 mm) bore. That suits small diameters in free-cutting materials; it is light for roughing a 12 in (305 mm) disc, even though the table gives that as the maximum turning diameter. With a BMT45 turret the maximum is 11 in (279 mm) and with a VDI turret 6.8 in (173 mm).

X travel is 7.88 in (200 mm), rapids are 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) and each axis is rated 3,300 lbf (14,679 N). The turret row reads 12-station BOT with 0.75 in (19.1 mm) of rear clearance for boring bars. Milled features need the ST-10LY, which has the same bed with ± 2 in (± 51 mm) of Y and live tools at 4,000 rpm.

The longer casting adds weight and length at delivery: 10,000 lb (4,536 kg) on a 158 × 70 × 81 in (401 × 178 × 206 cm) pallet, against 7,900 lb (3,585 kg) for the ST-10. Haas lists a starting price of US$86,995.
