Overview

The Haas ST-10LY combines the long-bed Z-axis of the ST-10L with Y-axis and live tooling capability, creating the most compact long-bed mill-turn machine in the Haas lineup. With 610 mm (24 in) of Z-travel, +/-50.8 mm (+/-2.0 in) of Y-axis travel, and a BMT45 turret with 4,000 RPM live tooling, the ST-10LY handles done-in-one work on longer parts that need both turning and milling.

The A2-5 spindle delivers 14.9 kW (20 hp) and 102 Nm (75 ft-lb) of torque at 1,300 RPM, with a max speed of 6,000 RPM. The 44.5 mm (1.75 in) bar capacity and 165 mm (6.5 in) chuck keep the machine in the compact class, but the Y-axis and live tooling transform it from a simple turning center into a genuine multi-tasking cell.

Max cutting diameter is approximately 279 mm (11 in) with the BMT45 turret. Axis travels are 200 mm (7.9 in) in X, +/-50.8 mm in Y, and 610 mm (24 in) in Z. Rapids run at 12 m/min (472 ipm) on X and Y, and 30.5 m/min (1,200 ipm) on Z. The C-axis holds +/-0.01 degrees for precision milling work.

The ST-10LY fills a niche for shops machining small-diameter complex parts on longer stock — medical components, firearms parts, precision fittings, and instrumentation housings that need cross-drilling, flat milling, and tapping along with OD and ID turning.

At roughly $80,000-$110,000 configured, the ST-10LY delivers long-bed Y-axis mill-turn capability at the entry level of the Haas lineup. It eliminates second-op VMC work on longer parts while keeping the footprint and investment compact.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Long-bed Y-axis mill-turn capability in the most compact package Haas offers — ideal for tight floor plans
  • 6,000 RPM spindle speed delivers excellent surface speeds on small-diameter aluminum and brass finishing
  • BMT45 turret with 4,000 RPM live tooling enables cross-drilling, flat milling, and tapping on longer parts
  • 610 mm (24 in) Z-axis travel handles longer complex parts that won't fit the standard ST-10Y bed
  • C-axis at +/-0.01 degrees provides precision for interpolated milling and positioning work
  • At $80-110K configured, the most affordable long-bed Y-axis lathe from a tier-one manufacturer

Limitations

  • 1.75-inch bar capacity limits the machine to small-diameter bar work; larger stock requires the ST-15LY or ST-20LY
  • 15 hp spindle limits heavy roughing in stainless and tougher alloys on longer parts
  • BMT45 turret is smaller and less rigid than the BMT-65 used on the ST-20LY and larger machines
  • 30-gallon coolant tank is small for sustained production with live tooling generating additional heat
05

Best For

Medical and dental component shops machining longer complex parts requiring turning and milling in one setup Firearms manufacturers producing longer barrels, receivers, and precision components with cross-features Precision instrumentation and fitting manufacturers running small-diameter bar with off-center features Job shops needing compact long-bed Y-axis capability for occasional complex long parts Shops already running Haas ST-10Y machines that need the extra Z-travel for longer part families

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas ST-10LY cost?

Base price starts around $80,000. Adding sub-spindle option, parts catcher, chip conveyor, and common options pushes the configured price to $95,000-$110,000. The long-bed plus Y-axis premium over the standard ST-10 is approximately $35,000-$40,000.

02 What is the difference between the ST-10Y and ST-10LY?

The ST-10LY adds approximately 200 mm (8 in) of Z-axis travel, going from 406 mm to 610 mm (24 in). The spindle, Y-axis, turret, and live tooling specs are identical. Choose the LY when your parts with off-center features regularly exceed the standard bed length.

03 Can the ST-10LY run with a sub-spindle?

Yes. The ST-10LY can be ordered with an optional sub-spindle for back-working operations, enabling complete done-in-one machining on longer parts. The sub-spindle combined with Y-axis and live tooling creates a comprehensive small-part manufacturing cell.

04 How does the ST-10LY compare to the ST-20LY?

The ST-20LY has a larger 2.5-inch bar capacity, 20 hp spindle, A2-6 nose, 8.3-inch chuck, and BMT-65 turret with 6,000 RPM live tooling. The ST-10LY is more compact and affordable with 6,000 RPM spindle speed. Choose the ST-10LY for small-diameter work. Choose the ST-20LY for larger bar stock and more milling power.
