Overview
The Haas ST-40S is the short-bed member of the 15 in (381 mm) chuck, 35.5 in (902 mm) swing frame: it turns 30 in (762 mm) in diameter but only 28 in (711 mm) in length.
That proportion suits chucking work. Wheels, flanges, rings, valve bodies and bearing housings are wide and short, and a part 30 in across seldom needs more than 28 in of Z. The ST-40 offers 44 in (1,118 mm) of turning length and the ST-40L 80 in (2,032 mm) for work that does.
The spindle drives through a 2-speed gearbox: 40 hp (29.8 kW), 1,400 ft-lbf (1,898 N·m) at 150 rpm and 2,400 rpm maximum, with an A2-8 nose, a 4.62 in (117.3 mm) bore and 4 in (102 mm) of bar capacity.
