Overview
The Haas DS-40Y is the largest dual-spindle turning centre Haas builds with Y-axis capability. A 381 mm (15 in) chuck, 902 mm (35.5 in) maximum swing and 1,118 mm (44 in) of Z-travel put it well above the DS-30Y, and the 40 hp spindle delivers 1,898 Nm (1,400 ft-lbf) at 150 RPM.
Dual spindle plus Y-axis is the combination that makes a part complete. Turn and mill the front on the main spindle, hand off to the secondary spindle, finish the back, and the part comes off the machine done. The 508 mm (20 in) X-travel and 12-station turret give room for the milling tools that make the Y-axis worth having.
That 1,400 ft-lbf torque figure at 150 RPM is the standout number, and it's the same spindle arrangement used in the big-bore TL-3B. On a 15-inch chuck it means heavy interrupted cuts in alloy steel are realistic rather than aspirational. Bar capacity is 102 mm (4 in).
US$290,995 is the list price. The natural comparisons are Doosan's Puma TT series, Okuma's LB-EX with Y and sub-spindle, and Nakamura-Tome's larger twin-spindle machines. Those generally cost more and, in the Okuma and Nakamura cases, bring better rigidity and thermal control. The Haas argument is price, control familiarity and dealer coverage.

Off-centre milling, flats, keyways, cross holes and contoured features that a turret with live tooling alone can't reach. Combined with the sub-spindle, it means most parts come off complete rather than moving to a mill.

The DS-40Y is a considerably larger machine: 15-inch chuck against 10-inch, 35.5-inch swing, and a 40 hp spindle with 1,400 ft-lbf. If your parts fit a DS-30Y, that machine costs much less and spins faster.

On large diameters, no, since surface speed comes from diameter. For small parts or aluminium production it is, and a smaller ST or DS machine will cycle faster on that work.

A second spindle, drawbar and chuck to service, plus the handoff alignment between spindles. Expect somewhat more setup and periodic alignment checking than a single-spindle lathe, and budget service time accordingly.
