Overview

The Haas DS-20Y is a dual-spindle Y-axis turning center built on the redesigned ST-20 platform. It pairs a main spindle and sub-spindle with Y-axis live tooling, giving shops genuine done-in-one capability at a Haas price point. Turn the front, hand off to the sub-spindle, and machine the back side without ever opening the door.

The main spindle delivers 14.9 kW (20 hp) with 203 Nm (150 ft-lb) of torque at 500 RPM, topping out at 4,000 RPM. The sub-spindle is a 11.2 kW (15 hp) unit running up to 4,000 RPM. Both spindles use an A2-6 nose with a 203 mm (8 in) chuck on the main and a 165 mm (6.5 in) chuck on the sub. Bar capacity through the main spindle is 63.5 mm (2.5 in).

Y-axis travel is plus or minus 50.8 mm (2.0 in) on the 12-station BMT-65 turret with 6,000 RPM live tooling at 3.7 kW (5 hp). C-axis positioning holds plus or minus 0.01 degrees on both spindles. The turret indexes to work on either spindle, so you program the full cycle — front turning, milling, part handoff, back turning, and back milling — as a single operation.

The dual-spindle setup is what separates the DS-20Y from the ST-20Y. Instead of finishing the front side and running a second operation, the sub-spindle picks the part, cuts it off, and you machine the back in the same cycle. For parts like fittings, connectors, valve bodies, and any component with features on both ends, cycle time drops by 30-50% compared to running two separate operations.

At roughly $130,000-$165,000 configured, the DS-20Y costs about $50,000 more than an ST-20Y but eliminates the second operation entirely. For production runs of 500 pieces or more, the payback calculation works quickly. It competes with the Mazak QT-250MSY and Doosan Lynx 2100LSYB, both of which cost more but offer higher spindle power and larger work envelopes. Specs sourced from Haas Automation published data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Dual-spindle design enables genuine done-in-one production, eliminating second-op setups and halving handling time
  • Sub-spindle picks parts automatically, cuts off, and machines back features in the same cycle
  • Y-axis and C-axis live tooling on both spindles provide full mill-turn capability on front and back operations
  • Built on the proven ST-20 platform with 2.5-inch bar capacity for production bar feeding
  • At $130-165K, it undercuts comparable Mazak and Doosan dual-spindle Y-axis lathes by $30-50K
  • Same NGC control as every Haas machine, with dual-spindle programming handled through standard G-code
  • 30-50% cycle time reduction on parts with features on both ends compared to single-spindle plus second-op

Limitations

  • 20 hp main spindle and 15 hp sub-spindle are outpowered by the Mazak QT-250MSY's main spindle in heavy roughing
  • 63.5 mm (2.5 in) bar capacity limits the range of stock sizes compared to the larger DS-25Y and DS-30Y
  • Sub-spindle adds mechanical complexity and additional maintenance compared to single-spindle ST-20Y
  • Programming dual-spindle operations requires more CAM sophistication and post-processor setup than single-spindle work
  • 6.5-inch sub-spindle chuck limits the diameter of parts that can be picked for back-working

Best For

Production parts with features on both ends that currently require two operations or two machines Fittings, connectors, valve bodies, and coupling manufacturers running 500+ piece production lots Shops looking to eliminate second-op VMC time by completing parts in a single turning center cycle Bar-fed production of parts up to 63.5 mm (2.5 in) diameter needing front and back machining Automotive and hydraulic component manufacturers running high-mix, medium-volume part families Job shops adding done-in-one capability to reduce work-in-process and lead times

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas DS-20Y cost?

Base price starts around $130,000. Configured with chip conveyor, high-pressure coolant, parts catcher, and bar feeder interface, expect $145,000-$165,000. The sub-spindle and its chuck are included in the base price.

02 What is the difference between the DS-20Y and the ST-20Y?

The DS-20Y adds a sub-spindle for back-working operations. Everything else on the main spindle side is identical to the ST-20Y. The sub-spindle picks the part, cuts it off, and lets you machine the back side in the same cycle. The DS-20Y costs about $50,000 more than the ST-20Y.

03 How does the sub-spindle handoff work?

The sub-spindle advances to meet the main spindle, grips the part, and the cutoff tool separates the part from the bar stock. The sub-spindle then retracts and the turret indexes to back-working tools. Both spindles can synchronize speed for smooth handoffs without marking the part surface.

04 Can the DS-20Y run with a bar feeder?

Yes. The 63.5 mm (2.5 in) bar capacity works with the Haas Bar Feeder V2 and compatible third-party bar feeders. Bar-fed dual-spindle production is the primary use case for this machine.

05 How does the DS-20Y compare to the Mazak QT-250MSY?

The Mazak has more spindle power, a larger sub-spindle, and the SmoothG control with more polished mill-turn programming. It also costs $40-60K more. The DS-20Y is the budget entry into dual-spindle Y-axis turning with competent live tooling capability.
