Overview

The GF Machining Solutions CHARMILLES LASER S 500 U is a 5-axis laser texturing and micromachining system built on the compact LASER S 500 platform. By adding B-axis table rotation (720 degrees) and C-axis tilt to the base 550 x 400 x 500 mm X/Y/Z travel frame, the LASER S 500 U provides full 5-axis access to complex 3D surfaces on small-to-medium workpieces.

The 5-axis configuration is essential for texturing injection mold inserts, medical implant tooling, and other components with undercuts, compound curves, and surfaces that cannot be reached in 3-axis mode. The B-axis rotary table provides 720 degrees of continuous rotation, and the system supports 15 kg workpiece weight in full 5-axis mode with a maximum inertia of 0.17 kg-m-squared.

Laser source options include nanosecond Flexipulse at 50W or 100W IR and femtosecond Femto Flexipulse at 20W or 40W IR or IR-GR. Single or dual-source configurations are available, enabling both production texturing and precision cold ablation on the same machine.

The Beckhoff C6640 Industrial PC control with SPOT software provides intuitive texture programming, 3D surface mapping, and process parameter management through a 21.5-inch multi-touch display.

At 4,000 kg machine weight and 2,174 x 1,387 x 2,556 mm dimensions, the LASER S 500 U maintains the compact footprint of the 3-axis S 500 while adding the 5-axis capability required for complex mold inserts. This makes it the entry-level 5-axis laser texturing platform in the GF Machining Solutions lineup.

The LASER S 500 U targets mold shops, medical device manufacturers, and precision component producers that need 5-axis laser texturing capability on workpieces smaller than those requiring the LASER S 1000 U or 1200 U platforms.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Full 5-axis laser texturing capability in the most compact LASER S platform
  • 720-degree B-axis rotation enables complete access to complex 3D mold insert surfaces
  • Both ns and fs laser source options available with dual-source configuration
  • Same compact footprint as the 3-axis LASER S 500 despite added rotary axes
  • SPOT software with Beckhoff IPC provides modern, intuitive texture programming
  • Entry-level price point for 5-axis laser texturing makes the technology more accessible

Limitations

  • 15 kg workpiece weight limit in 5-axis mode restricts the machine to small inserts
  • 550 mm X-travel limits workpiece size compared to the LASER S 1000 U and 1200 U
  • Low inertia limit of 0.17 kg.m-squared constrains fixture and workpiece geometry in 5-axis
  • Significant price premium over the 3-axis LASER S 500 for the added rotary axes

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the LASER S 500 and LASER S 500 U?

The S 500 is 3-axis only. The S 500 U adds B-axis (720-degree table rotation) and C-axis (+/- 110-degree tilt) for full 5-axis capability. The 500 U handles complex 3D surfaces but has a lower workpiece weight limit of 15 kg in 5-axis mode versus 60 kg in 3-axis on the S 500.

02 Why is the 5-axis weight limit so much lower than 3-axis?

The rotary table and tilt axis must accelerate and decelerate the workpiece during 5-axis motion. The 15 kg limit and 0.17 kg.m-squared inertia limit ensure the rotary axes can achieve the positioning accuracy and speed required for precision texturing.

03 How does the S 500 U compare to the S 1000 U?

The S 1000 U has nearly double the X-travel (1,000 vs 550 mm), 150 kg workpiece capacity in 5-axis mode, 660 mm diameter envelope, and 6,500 kg weight. The S 500 U is for smaller inserts; the S 1000 U handles medium-to-large mold inserts.

04 Can the S 500 U use both ns and fs lasers simultaneously?

With the dual-source configuration, both laser sources are installed. The control switches between them as required by the program. They do not fire simultaneously but can be used in sequence within the same texturing program.
