Overview

The EMAG VT 2 is an inverted vertical CNC lathe from the German manufacturer EMAG, pioneering the inverted spindle concept where the spindle picks up the workpiece from below rather than clamping it in a conventional horizontal configuration. This design provides gravity-assisted chip evacuation and integrated automation.

The VT 2 handles workpieces up to 160 mm diameter and 200 mm length with a maximum chuck diameter of 160 mm. The spindle runs at 6,000 rpm with approximately 26 kW (35 hp). X-axis travel is 340 mm and Z-axis is 310 mm.

The inverted spindle design means the workpiece hangs vertically from the spindle above the work zone. Chips fall away by gravity, eliminating chip re-cutting and reducing coolant requirements. The built-in automation pickup eliminates the need for a separate robot or gantry loader -- the spindle itself loads and unloads parts from an integrated conveyor or turntable.

The turret holds 12 tools. Rapid traverse reaches 30 m/min on X and 30 m/min on Z. The VT 2 runs on Fanuc or Siemens controls. Machine weight is approximately 4,500 kg.

EMAG machines are designed for high-volume production of chucked parts. The VT 2 competes with conventional horizontal lathes plus automation but offers a more compact, integrated solution.

New machines price $200,000-$300,000. Used trade $100,000-$180,000.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Inverted spindle provides gravity-assisted chip evacuation -- chips fall away from the cut
  • Built-in automation eliminates separate robot or gantry loader
  • Compact footprint integrates turning, loading, and unloading in one machine
  • Short chip-to-chip load/unload time maximizes spindle utilization
  • 26 kW spindle handles aggressive steel and cast iron turning
  • Ideal for high-volume chucked parts production

Limitations

  • 160 mm max workpiece diameter limits part size
  • Inverted design is unfamiliar to operators trained on conventional lathes
  • EMAG service network in North America is limited
  • Higher purchase price than conventional horizontal CNC lathes
  • Limited to chucked parts -- no bar feeding capability

Best For

High-volume production of chucked turning parts under 160mm diameter Automotive gear blanks, bearings, and hub components Transmission and drivetrain component manufacturing Shops wanting integrated automation without separate robotic loading Hardened part turning where chip evacuation affects surface finish Production environments where compact footprint matters

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Cost?

New $200,000-$300,000. Used $100,000-$180,000.

02 What is an inverted vertical lathe?

The spindle hangs above the work zone and picks up parts from below. Chips fall away by gravity, and the spindle itself acts as the part loader/unloader.

03 Max part size?

160 mm diameter, 200 mm length.

04 Does it need a separate robot?

No. The inverted spindle picks up and deposits parts from an integrated conveyor or turntable, eliminating the need for external automation.

05 Who is EMAG?

German machine tool manufacturer specializing in inverted vertical lathes and integrated production systems for high-volume chucked parts.
