Overview
The EMAG VL 8 is the largest machine in the VL vertical turning range listed here, with 1,110 mm (43.5 in) of X travel and a 500 mm (19.5 in) chuck for parts up to 400 mm (15.5 in) in diameter and 300 mm (12 in) long. The spindle delivers 47.5 / 34.5 kW (64 / 46.5 hp) and 780 / 600 Nm (575.5 / 442.5 ft-lb), with a top speed of 2,850 rpm.
Torque is what this machine is bought for. 780 Nm on a 400 mm part allows deep roughing passes on heavy blanks where a smaller spindle would stall or chatter. The other side of that is speed: 2,850 rpm is the lowest top speed in the range, so bores and small diameters on the same part are cut at reduced surface speed.
Z travel is 595 mm (23.5 in) and swing is 520 mm (20.5 in). Both axes rapid at 30 m/min (1,181 ipm), so the long X stroke does not cost much time on each move. The 12-station turret uses VDI 60 holders, the heaviest of the VL sizes, which is right for the cutting forces but means a separate holder stock from smaller machines.
The VL 6 below it takes parts up to 300 mm (12 in) with 460 / 340 Nm (339.5 / 251 ft-lb) and runs to 3,100 rpm. A buyer weighing the VL 8 against the VM 9 should note that the VM 9 also takes 400 mm (15.5 in) parts but lists 83 kW (111 hp) and 990 Nm (730 ft-lb). The VL 8 table does not list driven tools, a Y axis, the control or machine weight.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 780 / 600 Nm (575.5 / 442.5 ft-lb) and 47.5 / 34.5 kW (64 / 46.5 hp) for heavy roughing
- Takes parts up to 400 mm (15.5 in) in diameter and 300 mm (12 in) long
- 500 mm (19.5 in) chuck with 520 mm (20.5 in) swing
- 1,110 mm (43.5 in) of X travel at 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) rapid
- 12-station turret with VDI 60 holders for high cutting forces
Limitations
- Top speed of 2,850 rpm limits cutting speed on bores and small diameters
- VDI 60 holders are not shared with the VDI 50 of the VL 6
- The table lists no driven tools or Y axis
- Control, footprint and machine weight are not listed

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Up to 400 mm (15.5 in) in diameter and 300 mm (12 in) in length, in a 500 mm (19.5 in) chuck. Swing is 520 mm (20.5 in).
02
47.5 / 34.5 kW (64 / 46.5 hp) and 780 / 600 Nm (575.5 / 442.5 ft-lb). Top speed is 2,850 rpm. The table does not say which duty cycle each figure of a pair refers to, so confirm the continuous rating with EMAG.
03
1,110 mm (43.5 in) in X and 595 mm (23.5 in) in Z, both with a rapid traverse of 30 m/min (1,181 ipm). The X stroke is the longest of the VL sizes, which matters for floor layout around the machine.
04
Parts above 300 mm (12 in) in diameter need the VL 8. Below that, the VL 6 with 460 / 340 Nm (339.5 / 251 ft-lb) and a 3,100 rpm spindle may be enough, and its higher speed helps on smaller features.
