Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Drake GS:TEM that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Drake GS:TEM is the smallest machine in Drake's external thread grinder brochure: a CNC grinder with 3 axes for parts up to 25 mm (1.0 in) in diameter, with a 5 kW (6.7 hp) wheel spindle that runs to 12,000 rpm. It weighs 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) and occupies 1.45 m W x 1.85 m D (57.1 in x 72.8 in).
The wheel end is scaled to small threads. Standard wheels are ≤250 mm (9.8 in) in outside diameter on a 76.2 mm (3.0 in) bore and 10-25 mm (0.4-1.0 in) wide, and Drake gives a surface speed of up to 100 m/sec. The GS:TE240-360, two columns along in the same brochure, runs wheels of ≤400 mm (15.7 in) on a 160 mm (6.3 in) bore at 8,000 rpm. On the small machine the surface speed comes from spindle speed, not from wheel diameter.
Wheel helix adjustment is ±10° from horizontal. That covers single-start threads, taps and gages of modest lead, but steep multi-start worms need more swing than this machine has. The workhead has an A2-4 spindle nose and a listed speed of up to 300 rpm continuous.
Accuracy figures are the ones Drake gives across the brochure: linear positioning accuracy of <0.004 mm (<0.00016 in) over length of travel and repeatability of <0.002 mm (<0.00008 in). The axes are driven by linear motors on linear roller ways, and the base is cast polymer, which Drake says is there for vibration damping and thermal stability. Dressing uses a diamond roll 115 mm (4.5 in) in diameter and up to 32 mm (1.3 in) wide.
Installation is modest for a thread grinder: a 200-600 V supply at 20-30 kVA, with the work held 1.0 m (39.4 in) above the floor. Drake's documents do not agree on this model's length between centers, so confirm that figure against your longest part before ordering.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 12,000 rpm wheel spindle rated 5 kW (6.7 hp), with a surface speed of up to 100 m/sec
- Linear positioning accuracy of <0.004 mm (<0.00016 in) over length of travel, with repeatability of <0.002 mm (<0.00008 in)
- Small footprint and mass for a thread grinder: 1.45 m W x 1.85 m D (57.1 in x 72.8 in) and 3,000 kg (6,614 lb)
- Linear motors on linear roller ways and a cast polymer base, the same construction Drake describes for the larger GS:TE machines
- PartSmart menu-driven screens: the operator enters part-specific values and the software does the rest
Limitations
- Maximum part diameter is 25 mm (1.0 in); larger work belongs on the GS:TE240-360, which takes 240 mm (9.4 in)
- Lead angle is limited to ±10° from horizontal, which rules out steep multi-start worms
- The table shows 3 CNC axes, where the GS:TE240-360 has 4
- Part probe and automation are listed as upgrades, not as standard equipment

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Parts up to 25 mm (1.0 in) in diameter. Drake says its external thread grinders are typically used for taps, gages, multi-start worms, ball screws, electronic steering components and thread rolls, and the GS:TEM handles the small end of that list. Its length between centers is stated differently in Drake's own documents, so ask Drake for the current figure.
02
Standard wheels are ≤250 mm (9.8 in) in outside diameter, 10-25 mm (0.4-1.0 in) wide, on a 76.2 mm (3.0 in) bore. The wheel spindle is rated 5 kW (6.7 hp) and runs to 12,000 rpm, for a surface speed of up to 100 m/sec. The dresser is a diamond roll of 115 mm (4.5 in) diameter.
03
Drake states a linear positioning accuracy of <0.004 mm (<0.00016 in) over length of travel and a linear positioning repeatability of <0.002 mm (<0.00008 in). Closed-loop precision feedback is listed as standard on all of its external thread grinders, and the axes run on linear motors and linear roller ways.
04
Electrical supply is 200-600 V at 20-30 kVA. The machine weighs 3,000 kg (6,614 lb), measures 1.45 m W x 1.85 m D (57.1 in x 72.8 in) overall and holds the work 1.0 m (39.4 in) above the floor. Coolant requirements are not in the brochure table for this model, so get them from Drake before planning the filtration system.
