Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Harrison Alpha 1550XS that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Harrison Alpha 1550XS marks the point where the Alpha range turns into a long-bed machine. It swings 554 mm (21.8 in) over the bed and is offered in four lengths, 1,500 / 2,000 / 3,000 / 4,000 mm (59.1 / 78.7 / 118.1 / 157.5 in) between centres. A 104 mm (4.1 in) spindle bore runs through a D1-11 camlock nose, and the spindle has 15 kW (20.1 hp) over 1 - 2,000 rpm.
Four metres between centres on a lathe that can still be worked by hand is a rare combination. It is the format wanted for hydraulic rods, rolls, drive shafts and pipe, where the batch size is often one and a skilled turner wants to feel the first cut before letting a cycle finish the job. The Alpha's manual and semi-automatic modes are built for that. Threads, tapers, radii and grooves can be set up through question-and-answer screens, without writing a program.
A 12 in (305 mm) chuck is listed. Swing over the cross slide is 370 mm (14.6 in), and the gap opens the swing to 830 mm (32.7 in) for work held close to the spindle. The 104 mm (4.1 in) bore is large enough to take much pipe and heavy bar straight through the headstock.
Long beds need support equipment, and most of it is optional: travelling and stationary steady rests, hydraulic tailstock and steady rests, a swarf conveyor and an auto indexing tool turret. The tailstock supplied as standard is manual. Colchester states the lathe is built to DIN 8605 toolroom accuracy standards.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Four bed lengths up to 4,000 mm (157.5 in) between centres
- 104 mm (4.1 in) spindle bore through a D1-11 camlock nose
- 15 kW (20.1 hp) spindle, double the 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) of the Harrison Alpha 1400XS
- Swing in the gap of 830 mm (32.7 in)
- Semi-automatic cycles for threads, tapers and grooves without full programming
Limitations
- Maximum speed of 2,000 rpm
- Steady rests, hydraulic tailstock and swarf conveyor are all options, and long shafts will need them
- No C-axis or driven tools on the XS; that is the Harrison Alpha 1550XC
- Only one chuck size, 12 in (305 mm), is listed

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Distance between centres is offered as 1,500 / 2,000 / 3,000 / 4,000 mm (59.1 / 78.7 / 118.1 / 157.5 in). Swing over the cross slide, which limits the diameter of a long shaft, is 370 mm (14.6 in). Steady rests are optional.
02
The spindle has a 104 mm (4.1 in) bore, a D1-11 camlock nose, a speed range of 1 - 2,000 rpm and 15 kW (20.1 hp) of power. The listed chuck is 12 in (305 mm). UK-specification machines are supplied with a PBI Super Precision 3-jaw scroll chuck.
03
The Harrison Alpha 1660XS is the next size: 660 mm (26.0 in) swing, 18.5 kW (24.8 hp), bed lengths up to 6,000 mm (236.2 in) and an optional 155 mm (6.1 in) bore. The 1550XS stops at 4,000 mm (157.5 in) and a 104 mm (4.1 in) bore but turns faster, to 2,000 rpm across its whole range.
