Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Colchester Multiturn 3000 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
A 12 in (305 mm) chuck and a 78 mm (3.1 in) spindle bore give the Colchester Multiturn 3000 noticeably more workholding than its 460 mm (18.1 in) swing suggests. This flat-bed CNC lathe has an 11 kW (14.8 hp) spindle with a range of 1 - 2,200 rpm, a D1-8 camlock nose and bed lengths of 1,500 / 2,000 mm (59.1 / 78.7 in) between centres.
Power rises by more than half compared with the Multiturn 2000 and its 7 kW (9.4 hp). That, with the larger nose, makes this the first Multiturn that can take a proper roughing cut in steel at the top of its diameter range. It is also where the range starts to suit tube and pipe, because 78 mm (3.1 in) through the headstock covers a great deal of hydraulic and structural stock.
The bed gap is deep. Swing in the gap is 730 mm (28.7 in), so wheels, flanges and discs much larger than the nominal swing can be faced and bored close to the chuck. Beyond the gap, the 270 mm (10.6 in) swing over the cross slide governs.
Colchester lists the 12 in (305 mm) chuck here even though the Harrison Alpha 1460XS, which shares this geometry, is listed with a 10 in (254 mm) chuck. Control is the Siemens 828D with ShopTurn. The standard machine has a manual tailstock, automatic lubrication, a coolant pump and a roll-out swarf bin; a swarf conveyor, an auto indexing turret and hydraulic chucking are options.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 78 mm (3.1 in) spindle bore on a D1-8 camlock nose
- 12 in (305 mm) chuck listed
- 11 kW (14.8 hp) spindle, against 7 kW (9.4 hp) on the Multiturn 2000
- 730 mm (28.7 in) swing in the gap
- ShopTurn conversational programming on a Siemens 828D
Limitations
- Swing over the cross slide is 270 mm (10.6 in)
- Top speed of 2,200 rpm limits surface speed on small diameters
- Longest bed is 2,000 mm (78.7 in); longer work needs the Multiturn 4000
- No XC driven-tool version is listed at this size

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Swing over the bed 460 mm (18.1 in), 1,500 / 2,000 mm (59.1 / 78.7 in) between centres, a 78 mm (3.1 in) spindle bore, a 12 in (305 mm) chuck, a D1-8 camlock nose, a 1 - 2,200 rpm speed range and 11 kW (14.8 hp) of spindle power.
02
Swing in the gap is 730 mm (28.7 in), compared with 460 mm (18.1 in) over the bed and 270 mm (10.6 in) over the cross slide. The page gives no figure for the length of the gap, so check how far from the chuck the larger swing extends.
03
The Multiturn 4000, with a 554 mm (21.8 in) swing, a 104 mm (4.1 in) bore, a D1-11 camlock nose and bed lengths up to 4,000 mm (157.5 in). The Multiturn 4000 has the same 11 kW (14.8 hp) and a slightly lower top speed of 2,000 rpm.
04
No. The table answers No for C-axis and driven tools, and Colchester lists XC versions of the Multiturn at other sizes only. An auto indexing tool turret without driven stations is an option, in place of the standard quick change tool post.
