Overview

The Chevalier FNL-220LY is a Y-axis turning center with live tooling and a servo tailstock. It is the single-spindle sibling of the FNL-220LSY: the same 4,500 rpm main spindle, the same 16-station Power BMT45 turret and the same Y axis, with a tailstock in the place where the other machine has a sub-spindle.

That makes it the version for shaft work. The tailstock travels 22 in (560 mm) under servo control and has a 3.3 in (85 mm) quill with an MT5 taper and 4 in (100 mm) of stroke. A long part held between chuck and centre can be turned, then milled with keyways or flats using the Y axis, without the deflection that an unsupported bar would show.

The chuck is 8 in (203 mm) and the spindle passes 2.5 in (65 mm) bar through a 3.0 in (77 mm) bore on an A2-6 ASA nose. Chevalier describes the spindle as supported by three sets of high-speed ball thrust bearings and one cylindrical roller bearing. Maximum cutting diameter is 10.6 in (Ø270 mm) and cutting length 20.1 in (510 mm). The C axis is listed at 360° with a speed of 200 rpm.

The turret indexes in 0.16 sec. According to the maker, Y-axis milling extends ± 2.17 in off the spindle centerline. The machine weighs 12,500 lb (5,700 kg), a little less than the two-spindle model, in the same 161.8 in x 76.9 in x 83.5 in envelope. The control is a Fanuc 0i-T.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Servo tailstock with 22 in (560 mm) of travel and an MT5 quill for shaft work
  • Y axis reaching ± 2.17 in off centerline, per the maker
  • 16-station Power BMT45 live turret, 0.16 sec index
  • 8 in (203 mm) chuck with 2.5 in (65 mm) bar capacity
  • Single Meehanite casting with a torque tube design

Limitations

  • No sub-spindle, so the second end needs another operation
  • Cutting length is 20.1 in (510 mm), short for a tailstock machine
  • Maximum cutting diameter of 10.6 in (Ø270 mm)
  • The maker's travel and feed rate rows are not labelled reliably and no spindle power is published
06

Best For

Shafts and spindles with keyways milled in the same setup Parts that need tailstock support during turning Chucked work with off-centre drilled and milled features Shops that do not need back-end machining

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Does the FNL-220LY have a sub-spindle?

No. The specification table for the FNL-220LY lists a tailstock: quill diameter 3.3 in (85 mm), MT5 taper, 4 in (100 mm) of quill travel and 22 in (560 mm) of servo tailstock travel. The sub-spindle is on the FNL-220LSY.

02 What is the turning capacity?

Swing over bed and over saddle is 24.4 in (Ø620 mm). Maximum cutting diameter is 10.6 in (Ø270 mm) and maximum cutting length 20.1 in (510 mm). The chuck is 8 in (203 mm).

03 How fast is the spindle?

Maximum spindle speed is 4,500 rpm, with an A2-6 ASA spindle nose and a 3.0 in (77 mm) bore. Under C axis control the spindle is listed at 200 rpm. The table does not state motor power.

04 What live tooling system is used?

The turret type is Power BMT45 with 16 stations, so any station can carry a driven tool. Chevalier says the series provides multi-axis milling and turning with off-centerline Y-axis milling capability.
