Overview

The Chevalier FVL-1600VTC+C combines a 78.7 in (2,000 mm) vertical turning lathe with a C axis and a live machining spindle. It is the mid-size FVL machine in its mill-turn form, for parts that need 19,030 Nm of turning torque and then a pattern of holes or milled features on the same faces.

The live spindle runs from 25 to 2,500 rpm through an ISO 7/24 No.50 taper. That is boring-mill territory: large drills, face mills and taps, not small high-speed cutters. The C axis indexes in steps of 0.001° and rotates at 3.3 rpm, and the C axis cutting feed is listed as 0 to 1,200 deg./min for milling while the table turns.

Because X travel runs -33.1 in, +45.7 in through the table centre, the live tool can reach any radius on the 63.0 in (1,600 mm) table. Z travel is 35.4 in (900 mm), with 31.5 in (800 mm) more from the W axis beam. Chevalier also mentions a Y model in this series, designed for key-slot milling of large or heavy workpieces; the specification table covers the +C version only, so ask about Y separately.

The table carries 22,000 lb (10,000 kg) at High: 91 to 250 rpm or Low: 1 to 90 rpm. Tools are BT50, up to 19.7 in (500 mm) long, changed in 30 sec. Size and weight match the turning-only model at 284.3 in x 248.0 in x 226.4 in and 70,500 lb (32,000 kg).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Live spindle of 25 to 2,500 rpm with an ISO 7/24 No.50 taper for large drills and face mills
  • C axis with 0.001° indexing and a cutting feed of 0 to 1,200 deg./min
  • X travel through the table centre reaches any radius on the 63.0 in (1,600 mm) table
  • 22,000 lb (10,000 kg) table load and 19,030 Nm of torque for the turning operations
  • Tool held by a coupling type clamping system with 8 hydraulic locking pins

Limitations

  • No Y axis in the listed specification; off-centre features rely on X and C interpolation
  • 2,500 rpm live spindle is slow for small tools
  • Tool change time is 30 sec
  • 70,500 lb (32,000 kg) and 226.4 in (5,750 mm) of height

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What milling capability does the FVL-1600VTC+C have?

A machining spindle with an ISO 7/24 No.50 taper running from 25 to 2,500 rpm, fed by a disk type changer with BT50 tooling. The C axis has a minimum index angle of 0.001°, a rotation speed of 3.3 rpm and a cutting feed of 0 to 1,200 deg./min.

02 Does it have a Y axis?

The specification table lists X, Z, W and C. Chevalier's feature list mentions a Y model designed for key-slot milling of large-sized or heavy workpieces, but gives no figures for it. Ask the maker which Y configuration is available on this size.

03 What is the turning capacity?

Maximum swing and cutting diameter are 78.7 in (2,000 mm), turning height is 51.6 in (1,310 mm), table load 22,000 lb (10,000 kg) and maximum torque 19,030 Nm. Table speed is High: 91 to 250 rpm and Low: 1 to 90 rpm.

04 How large can tools be?

Maximum tool diameter is Ø11 in (Ø280 mm) in what the maker calls the full cutter state, and maximum tool length is 19.7 in (500 mm). Tool shank is BT50 with a JMBTA standard 45° pull stud.
