Overview

The Chevalier FBL-300LMC is the long-bed, live-tooling member of the FBL-300 family: 63 in (1,600 mm) of Z travel and 67.2 in (1,708 mm) between centers, with a driven-tool turret. It exists for long shafts that need more than turning, such as keyways, cross-drilled oil holes, wrench flats and drilled ends.

On a shaft of this length, moving the part to a mill means a second setup with supports and re-alignment. Doing the milling in the lathe, with the part still between chuck and programmable tailstock, keeps the features in line with the journals. The tailstock travels 59.4 in (1,510 mm) and has a hydraulic MT 5 quill 3.5 in (90 mm) in diameter.

The turret holds 12 tools, and the tool system row for this model reads BMT-55. That differs from the short-bed FBL-300MC, which is listed with BMT-75, so confirm the interface before buying driven holders. Maximum cutting diameter with live tooling is 15.4 in (390 mm). The maker's cutting length row for this model does not agree between inch and metric and is left out.

The spindle is the family's A2-8 unit, 3.5 in (88 mm) bore, 3.0 in (77 mm) bar capacity, 2,500 rpm. X travel is 11.4 in (290 mm), and rapid traverse is 708 / 708 ipm (18 m/min / 18 m/min). The machine weighs 19,800 lb (9,000 kg). No Y axis is listed, so milling is on centre. The control is a Fanuc 0i-T.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Live tooling on a long bed with 63 in (1,600 mm) of Z travel
  • 67.2 in (1,708 mm) between centers with a programmable tailstock
  • 12-tool driven turret for milling and drilling
  • A2-8 spindle with 3.0 in (77 mm) bar capacity
  • Box-way bed weighing 19,800 lb (9,000 kg)

Limitations

  • Tool system is listed as BMT-55, not the BMT-75 of the short-bed FBL-300MC
  • Cutting diameter with live tools is 15.4 in (390 mm)
  • No Y axis in the specification
  • The maker's table gives no clean cutting length or floor space for this model

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What makes the FBL-300LMC different from the FBL-300L?

Live tooling. The FBL-300LMC lists a BMT-55 tool system with 12 tools and a 15.4 in (390 mm) maximum cutting diameter. The FBL-300L lists 10 tools (12 optional) without a driven tool system and cuts up to 20 in (510 mm).

02 What are the travels?

Z travel is 63 in (1,600 mm) and X travel 11.4 in (290 mm). Distance between centers is 67.2 in (1,708 mm), and tailstock travel is 59.4 in (1,510 mm). Rapid traverse is 708 / 708 ipm.

03 Which driven tool interface does it use?

The table for the FBL-300LMC states BMT-55. The short-bed FBL-300MC states BMT-75. Since the two machines share a frame, check with Chevalier which is correct for the machine being quoted.

04 What spindle is fitted?

An A2-8 spindle nose with a 3.5 in (88 mm) hole, 3.0 in (77 mm) maximum bar material diameter and a speed of 2,500 rpm. The maker's feature list for the series mentions up to a 25HP spindle motor.
