Overview

The Chevalier FBL-320SY is the big-bore model of the box-way Y-axis turning centers, with a sub-spindle. Its main spindle has an A2-8 nose, takes a 10 in or 12 in chuck and passes 3 in (77 mm) bar, at a top speed of 3,500 rpm. That is a heavier front end than the FBL-250SY, whose A2-6 ASA spindle runs to 4,500 rpm with 2.5 in (65 mm) bar.

The swing and work envelope do not change: 23.6 in (Ø600 mm) over the bed, an 18 in (Ø460 mm) maximum cutting diameter and 21.5 in (548 mm) of cutting length. What the larger spindle buys is grip and torque capacity for bigger chucked parts and thicker bar, at the cost of speed on small diameters.

The sub-spindle is the lighter of the two, as it should be for finishing operations. It is listed at 6,000 rpm with an A2-5 ASA nose and a 6 in (152 mm) chuck, and it moves 25.5 in (650 mm) on the B axis at 945 ipm (24 m/min). Both C axes have a 0.001° increment.

The turret row reads Power BMT60(55), with 12 (16) tools and a 0.2 sec index time. Feed rates are 945 / 394 / 945 ipm for X, Y and Z. Chevalier describes a dual 30-degree slant bed with box ways and a heavy-duty vibration-resistant frame. The machine weighs 14,550 lb (6,600 kg), against 12,787 lb (5,800 kg) for the FBL-250SY, on the same 119.1 in x 74.2 in x 75.3 in footprint. A Fanuc 0i-T controls it.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • A2-8 main spindle with a 10 in or 12 in chuck and 3 in (77 mm) bar capacity
  • 6,000 rpm sub-spindle with a 6 in (152 mm) chuck for second-side finishing
  • 25.5 in (650 mm) of B-axis travel at 945 ipm (24 m/min)
  • Power BMT60(55) live turret with a 0.2 sec index time
  • Same 119.1 in wide footprint as the smaller FBL-250SY

Limitations

  • Main spindle speed is limited to 3,500 rpm
  • The sub-spindle is much smaller than the main spindle, so large parts cannot be gripped equally on the second side
  • The maker's table gives no clean sub-spindle bore or bar capacity for this model
  • Y-axis feed rate of 394 ipm (10 m/min)

Best For

Larger chucked parts needing both sides machined 3 in (77 mm) bar work with milled features Forgings and castings up to 18 in (Ø460 mm) Heavy turning followed by light back-end finishing

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the FBL-320SY differ from the FBL-250SY?

The FBL-320SY has an A2-8 spindle nose, a 10 in or 12 in chuck, 3 in (77 mm) bar capacity and 3,500 rpm. The FBL-250SY has an A2-6 ASA nose, an 8 in (203 mm) chuck, 2.5 in (65 mm) bar capacity and 4,500 rpm. Swing and footprint are the same.

02 What are the sub-spindle figures?

Maximum speed 6,000 rpm, spindle nose A2-5 ASA and chuck size 6 in (152 mm). B-axis travel is 25.5 in (650 mm). The bore and bar capacity rows for the sub-spindle are not printed consistently in the maker's table and are left out here.

03 What is the cutting capacity?

Maximum cutting diameter is 18 in (Ø460 mm) and maximum cutting length 21.5 in (548 mm), with a swing over bed of 23.6 in (Ø600 mm). Chuck size is 10 in / 12 in (254 mm / 305 mm).

04 What does the turret row say?

Turret type Power BMT60(55), number of tools 12 (16), tool change time 0.2 sec tool to tool. The bracketed figures are printed without explanation, so confirm the turret options with Chevalier.
