Overview
The Studer S100 is a dedicated CNC internal cylindrical grinding machine from United Grinding Group's Studer division, purpose-built for precision internal bore grinding of small to medium-sized workpieces. It is specifically designed for production environments where high throughput of ID grinding operations is required — automotive fuel system components, hydraulic valve bodies, bearing rings, and precision housings being typical applications.
Unlike universal cylindrical grinders that add internal capability as a secondary function, the S100 is optimized from the ground up for internal grinding. Its compact wheelhead accepts up to three internal grinding spindles in a turret arrangement, allowing multiple bore diameters and profiles to be ground in a single setup without wheel change stoppages. The spindles cover bore diameters from approximately 1.5 mm up to 100 mm.
The S100's machine base uses Studer's Granitan S103 mineral casting, providing the vibration damping and thermal stability that internal grinding demands — bore roundness errors amplify in ID grinding because the contact arc between wheel and workpiece bore is inherently less stable than OD grinding. The hydrostatic Z-axis guideway contributes to the machine's ability to achieve bore cylindricity values below 1 µm.
Face grinding capability is integrated into the S100's standard configuration, enabling shoulder and face grinding in the same clamping as the bore operation. This is a significant productivity advantage for components like hydraulic valve spools and fuel injector bodies, where bore-to-face perpendicularity is a critical tolerance.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Dedicated ID grinding design optimizes every element for bore accuracy — unlike a universal machine with add-on ID spindle
- 3-position spindle turret enables multi-diameter bore grinding in one setup without wheel changes
- Achieves bore roundness below 0.1 µm and Ra below 0.04 µm — top-tier ID grinding performance
- Integrated face grinding capability for bore-to-face perpendicularity in single clamping
- Granitan base and hydrostatic Z-axis provide the stability ID grinding requires
Limitations
- Single-purpose internal grinding — cannot perform OD cylindrical grinding
- Workpiece diameter limited to 250 mm, limiting applicability for large housings
- High capital cost compared to conventional single-spindle ID grinders

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The S100 covers bore diameters from approximately 1.5 mm (with high-speed spindle up to 120,000 RPM) up to 100 mm. The three-spindle turret can carry spindles configured for different diameter ranges, allowing multiple bore sizes on the same workpiece to be ground without changing the setup.
02
Yes. Face grinding is standard on the S100. This allows bore and face operations to be completed in the same clamping, which is critical for achieving tight bore-to-face perpendicularity tolerances on components like valve spools, fuel injector bodies, and precision housings.
03
The S100's entire design — wheelhead geometry, spindle arrangement, Z-axis configuration, and software — is optimized for internal grinding. The ID spindle on a universal machine like the S31 is a secondary capability. For high-volume ID grinding or very demanding bore accuracy requirements, the S100 offers superior cycle times, more spindle options, and better structural optimization for the task.
04
The S100 is compatible with active gauging systems from Marposs and Renishaw, which provide in-process or post-process bore diameter measurement with automatic size compensation. These are commonly integrated in automotive production lines to maintain dimensional control across full production batches.
05
Yes. The S100 is designed to operate with both conventional abrasive wheels (aluminum oxide, silicon carbide) and superabrasive wheels (CBN, diamond). CBN internal grinding wheels are common in automotive camshaft bore and bearing ring applications where high stock removal rates and long wheel life are required.
