Overview
The Soraluce FS 8000 is a floor-type horizontal machining center combining an 8,000 mm (315 in) X-axis travel with the performance and automation integration of a modern machining center. Unlike a traditional boring mill, the FS 8000 features a high-speed milling spindle optimized for contour machining, a full ATC with up to 120 tools, and simultaneous 4-axis machining capability with optional 5-axis heads, bridging the gap between a conventional boring mill and a large horizontal machining center.
Axis travels measure 8,000 mm (315 in) in X, 3,000 mm (118 in) in Y, and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) in Z. The spindle delivers up to 6,000 RPM at 52 kW (69.7 HP) continuous power through an ISO 50 / HSK-A100 interface. This higher spindle speed compared to traditional boring mills enables face milling, profile milling, and contour operations at productivity levels that approach those of vertical machining centers, while the large working envelope handles workpieces that no VMC could accommodate.
The FS 8000 uses Soraluce's traveling-column architecture on precision linear guideways, with the workpiece stationary on the floor or on modular fixturing. A rotary table option (up to 8,000 kg capacity) enables 4-axis indexing of large parts without repositioning. Soraluce's Dynamic Workpiece Compensation (DWC) system corrects for workpiece thermal growth during long production runs, maintaining accuracy on large complex parts.
Positioning accuracy is ±0.008 mm (±0.00031 in) with ±0.004 mm (±0.00016 in) repeatability on linear axes. The Siemens SINUMERIK 840D sl control provides full 5-axis interpolation with optional milling heads. New FS 8000 machines price between $1,400,000 and $2,400,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 8,000 mm X-travel handles the full length of large structural weldments, machine bases, and frames in a single clamping, eliminating the accuracy risk of repositioning
- 52 kW spindle at 6,000 RPM provides both the power for heavy steel facing and sufficient speed for productive aluminum milling, making it more versatile than a traditional boring mill
- 120-tool ATC enables complex multi-operation programs with diverse tool requirements to run unattended across full shifts
- Dynamic Workpiece Compensation corrects for thermal growth on long workpieces during extended machining cycles, maintaining accuracy without operator intervention
- Soraluce's Active Vibration Control option suppresses chatter during long-reach milling and boring operations, increasing cutting efficiency in difficult setups
- Optional 5-axis milling heads and rotary table extend the FS 8000 to full 5-axis prismatic machining of complex parts with compound features
Limitations
- Floor-type installation requires precision-leveled guideways embedded in the shop floor — significant site preparation cost before the machine arrives
- 6,000 RPM spindle speed is lower than dedicated machining centers; high-speed aluminum machining is less productive than on a purpose-built HMC
- Large machine footprint requires a dedicated bay, overhead crane access, and appropriate chip management infrastructure
- Total installed cost including foundation, guideways, and workholding often exceeds $2 million even for base configurations
- Long setup times for workpiece alignment are inherent to floor-type large-part machining and reduce effective machine utilization for short-run jobs

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The SP 8000 is a traditional floor-type boring mill optimized for precision boring, facing, and heavy roughing with a lower-speed (4,500 RPM) ISO 50 spindle and emphasis on interchangeable heads for maximum operation flexibility. The FS 8000 is a floor-type machining center with a higher-speed spindle (6,000 RPM), larger ATC (up to 120 tools), and stronger emphasis on contour milling and multi-operation production with faster tool changes. The FS 8000 is more productive for milling-intensive programs; the SP 8000 is more flexible for diverse boring and facing operations via its head change system.
02
Soraluce's Dynamic Workpiece Compensation (DWC) system uses temperature sensors placed on the workpiece and machine structure to monitor thermal growth during long machining cycles. The Siemens 840D sl control applies real-time offsets to compensate for differential thermal expansion, keeping large parts within tolerance even when machining operations generate significant heat over 4-8 hour cycles. This is particularly valuable for large weldments that warm up during machining and would otherwise show dimensional drift.
03
Yes, with optional milling heads. Soraluce offers universal milling heads with A and B axes that attach to the FS 8000 spindle carrier, enabling full 5-axis simultaneous machining of compound-angle features. These heads are changed automatically under program control. The base machine with rotary table provides 4-axis capability; 5-axis heads extend this to full simultaneous 5-axis for complex structural machining.
04
In floor-type configuration with workpieces sitting directly on the floor or on heavy-duty modular fixturing, the FS 8000 has no practical weight limit from the machine itself — the shop floor and crane capacity become the constraints. With the optional rotary table, part weight is limited to 8,000 kg. Most heavy industry customers work with parts ranging from 500 kg to 20,000 kg in floor-type configuration.
05
Soraluce FS 8000 machines are engineered-to-order, with typical delivery times of 14-20 months from order confirmation depending on configuration, optional equipment, and Soraluce's production schedule at the time of order. Early engagement with Soraluce's application engineering team for site planning and foundation design is recommended to ensure the customer facility is ready for installation on schedule.
