DMG Mori NH 4000 DCG

The DMG MORI NH 4000 DCG is a compact horizontal machining center with 560 mm (22 in) of travel in X and Y and 630 mm (24.8 in) in Z. Its workpiece limits are 630 mm (24.8 in) in diameter, 900 mm (35.4 in) in height and 400 kg (881.8 lb).

The envelope figures need reading together. The 900 mm height limit is well above the 560 mm of Y travel, so it describes what clears the machine, not what the spindle reaches: on a tall tombstone the features have to sit inside the Y stroke. The 630 mm diameter likewise exceeds X travel, which is usual on a horizontal because the rotary table presents each face in turn.

DCG is the drive technology in the model name. DMG MORI links it to longer tool life, improved surface quality and roundness, and acceleration, though it attaches no figures to any of the three. The rotary axis is driven by a Direct Drive Motor, which the maker states achieves zero backlash and gives high-speed rotation and high-precision indexing with less maintenance. On tombstone work with frequent indexing between faces, the table drive shapes cycle time and positional accuracy as much as the linear axes do.

The machine is 106.7 in. high and 94.4 × 157.6 in. in width and depth. DMG MORI says the design cuts the required floor space by 11.1% compared to existing machines. Spindle speed, power, taper and tool capacity are not stated in the Highlights.

Two neighbours frame it. The NHX 4000 has the same 560 mm (22 in) of X and Y with 660 mm (26 in) of Z. The NH 5000 DCG is the next NH size, at 730 mm (28.7 in), 760 mm (29.9 in) and 850 mm (33.5 in).
