Overview

The Nakamura-Tome AS-200 is a single-turret multitasking turning center combining turning, milling, drilling, and tapping in a compact footprint. The AS designation signals a more feature-rich platform than the SC series, with standard Y-axis milling capability and C-axis contouring.

The machine accommodates 6-inch or 8-inch chucks with a maximum turning diameter of 290 mm (11.4 in) using the standard 12-station turret, or 280 mm with the optional 15-station turret. Maximum turning length is 300 mm (11.8 in) with a distance between centers of 427 mm. Bar capacity is 65 mm or 71 mm. The main spindle delivers 15/11 kW (20/15 hp) at speeds up to 4,500 RPM.

The turret is a dodecagonal drum type supporting up to 24 tool stations (12 turning + 12 milling), or an optional 15-station turret. Milling capability includes 5.5/3.7 kW driven tools at up to 6,000 RPM. Standard Y-axis stroke is 82 mm for off-center milling. C-axis provides 600 RPM for polar interpolation.

Rapid traverse rates are 24 m/min on X and 36 m/min on Z. Machine dimensions are 1,852 x 1,655 x 1,665 mm. FANUC 0i-TF Plus controller features a 15-inch touchscreen with 2 MB storage.

Nakamura-Tome builds the AS-200 with thermal symmetry design and hand-scraped assembly methods, maintaining tight tolerances through multi-shift production.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Standard Y-axis and C-axis provide genuine milling capability for complex parts in a single setup
  • Dodecagonal drum turret with up to 24 stations accommodates extensive tooling
  • Compact 1,852 x 1,655 x 1,665 mm footprint enables cell clustering
  • Nakamura-Tome thermal symmetry design maintains tolerances through multi-shift runs
  • 6,000 RPM milling spindle at 5.5 kW delivers real milling capability
  • FANUC 0i-TF Plus with 15-inch touchscreen supports modern workflows

Limitations

  • 4,500 RPM main spindle speed is moderate for small aluminum or medical parts
  • 290 mm max turning diameter constrains the machine to small-to-medium parts
  • Single turret limits simultaneous cutting vs twin-turret machines
  • North American dealer network through Methods is smaller than Mazak or Okuma

Best For

Precision job shops producing complex small parts requiring turning, milling, drilling, and tapping in one setup Medical device manufacturers producing implant components and surgical instruments Automotive component producers running families of shafts and fittings under 290 mm Hydraulic component manufacturers producing valve bodies with cross-drilling Shops replacing separate lathes and mills with a single multitasking platform

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the AS-200 differ from the SC-200?

The AS-200 has standard Y-axis milling, more turret stations (up to 24 vs 12), larger bar capacity (65/71 mm vs 51 mm), and higher spindle power (15 kW vs 11 kW). The SC-200 is simpler and less expensive.

02 Can it run unattended with a bar feeder?

Yes. The 65/71 mm bar capacity supports magazine bar feeders. Combined with a parts catcher, the AS-200 runs unattended for extended periods.

03 What is the 15-station turret option?

The optional 15-station turret provides 15 dedicated positions all capable of driven tooling vs the 12-station drum with shared positions.

04 What does a new AS-200 cost?

New machines price between $150,000 and $220,000 depending on turret, sub-spindle, bar feeder, and coolant options.
