Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Messer MetalMaster Xcel that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Messer MetalMaster Xcel is the fast machine in the MetalMaster line, a unitized table that can carry plasma, fiber laser or both on one gantry. Positioning speeds reach 3,000 ipm (76.2 m/min) with acceleration up to 0.5 g (193 in/sec²). Cutting widths are 6 ft, 8 ft and 10 ft, and cutting lengths run from 10 ft to 55 ft in 5 ft increments.
The combination is the point. With a fiber laser and a plasma torch on the same machine, internal features can be cut by laser and the outside profile by plasma without moving the part. Maximum laser cutting thickness is 2 in (51 mm) and maximum plasma cutting 3 in (76 mm), so the two processes overlap through most of the plate range. Up to two fiber lasers of up to 20 kW and two precision plasma torches of 400 amp each are listed as options; an earlier flyer for the laser version gave 15 kW.
To move that fast with accuracy the gantry is a stress relieved steel box beam, driven by 8.4 hp (6.3 kW) and 4.7 hp (3.5 kW) AC servo motors through planetary gear reducers on a helical rack. Machine motion accuracy is +/- 0.002 in (0.05 mm) in an 80 in area, verified with a laser interferometer. The CSL torch lifter moves at 1,180 ipm (30.0 m/min) under arc voltage height control.
The Slagger self-cleaning table is standard, and for laser work a shuttle system with dual pallets, a shuttle table enclosure and a storage tower are available. Other options are the Deltae bevel rotator for +/- 45° cut part angles, drilling up to 1/2 in (12.7 mm) in diameter, oxyfuel torches and pipe and tube cutting. The control is the Global ControlPlus with a 24 in touch screen.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Positioning speeds up to 3,000 ipm (76.2 m/min) with acceleration up to 0.5 g (193 in/sec²)
- Fiber laser and plasma can be combined on one gantry
- Machine motion accuracy of +/- 0.002 in (0.05 mm) in an 80 in area
- Cutting lengths from 10 ft to 55 ft in 5 ft increments
- Slagger self-cleaning table is standard; dual-pallet shuttle system is available
Limitations
- Cutting width stops at 10 ft
- Laser cutting thickness is limited to 2 in (51 mm); thicker plate goes to plasma, up to 3 in (76 mm)
- Lasers, second plasma torch, bevel rotator and drilling are all options
- A laser needs the shuttle table enclosure, which adds length to the installation

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Yes. A fiber laser and plasma combination is an option, and Messer describes cutting critical internal features with the fiber laser and external features with the plasma torch without moving the part. Maximum laser cutting thickness is 2 in (51 mm) and maximum plasma cutting 3 in (76 mm).
02
Positioning speeds are up to 3,000 ipm (76.2 m/min), with acceleration up to 0.5 g (193 in/sec²). The axes are driven by 8.4 hp (6.3 kW) and 4.7 hp (3.5 kW) AC servo motors through planetary gear reducers on a helical rack and pinion. The CSL torch lifter runs at 1,180 ipm (30.0 m/min).
03
Cutting widths of 6 ft, 8 ft and 10 ft, and cutting lengths from 10 ft to 55 ft in 5 ft increments. Material from 26 ga. to 3 in (76 mm) thick plate can be cut, depending on the process, in mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum.
04
The current brochure lists two fiber lasers up to 20 kW as an option. An older flyer for the laser configuration listed up to 15 kW, so confirm the available power with the maker. A shuttle system with dual pallets and a shuttle table enclosure are offered with it.
05
With options. The Deltae rotator turns +/- 460° and gives cut part angles of +/- 45°, and comes with bevel programming software and training. Drilling up to 1/2 in (12.7 mm) in diameter is also optional, as are plate markers and a pipe and tube cutting system.
