Overview
The Mazak INTEGREX i-400S is the dual-spindle version of Mazak's mid-range multi-tasking platform, combining the i-400's generous work envelope with a fully programmable sub spindle for complete done-in-one processing of medium-to-large parts. The addition of the sub spindle transforms the i-400 from a capable mill-turn into a true production multi-tasking machine that can process both ends of a part without operator intervention.
The main spindle delivers 30 kW (40 hp) at 3,300 RPM through a 10-inch chuck with 102 mm (4.0 in) bar capacity. The sub spindle runs at 4,000 RPM with 22 kW (30 hp) and an 8-inch chuck, providing genuine back-working capability for heavy turning, drilling, and milling on the B-end. The milling spindle hits 12,000 RPM with 22 kW (30 hp) through a Capto C6 interface, with a 20,000 RPM option for high-speed finishing on aluminum and composites.
The B-axis covers 240 degrees (-30 to +210) with 0.0001-degree resolution on a roller cam drive. Combined with 250 mm (9.84 in) of Y-axis travel and continuous C-axis on both spindles, the i-400S can attack any feature angle on both part ends. X-axis travel spans 615 mm, Z-axis runs 1,585 mm, and the W-axis (sub spindle) provides 1,562 mm of travel for part transfer and long-shaft back-working.
The standard 36-tool ATC expands to 72 or 110 tools with Capto C6 shanks. An NC tailstock with 1,562 mm of travel supports long shafts during heavy cuts on the main spindle side. Current machines ship with MAZATROL SmoothAi featuring Ai Thermal Shield. At approximately 16,200 kg (35,714 lb), the i-400S demands solid foundation work and adequate floor space. New machines price between $400,000 and $600,000, with used units from 2014-2020 trading between $180,000 and $380,000. Specs sourced from Mazak published data and dealer documentation.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Dual-spindle configuration with 22 kW sub spindle provides genuine back-working capability for heavy turning and milling on both part ends, not just light finishing
- 102 mm (4.0 in) bar capacity and 10-inch main chuck handle medium-to-large bar stock and chucked work that exceeds the i-200S's 65 mm limit
- 1,519 mm machining length with NC tailstock support accommodates long aerospace shafts, landing gear components, and oil-field tubulars in a single setup
- 12,000 RPM Capto C6 milling spindle with 22 kW delivers true machining center performance for complex 5-axis contouring across the full B-axis range
- 240-degree B-axis with 0.0001-degree resolution and roller cam drive ensures zero-backlash positioning for precision angular features on both part ends
- SmoothAi control with Ai Thermal Shield provides active thermal compensation during long multi-tasking cycles, critical for maintaining tolerances across 4-8 hour production runs
Limitations
- 3,300 RPM main spindle is slower than the i-200S's 5,000 RPM, limiting high-speed turning performance on smaller-diameter aluminum and non-ferrous materials
- 16,200 kg machine weight and 5+ meter footprint require substantial foundation engineering and rigging planning that adds $15,000-$30,000 to installation costs
- New price starting at $400K represents a major capital investment; ROI requires consistent elimination of multiple setups per part across significant production volume
- Dual-spindle programming is complex; expect 4-6 months ramp-up time and custom post processor development for synchronized simultaneous operations
- Periodic B-axis laser calibration at $250+/hour from Mazak service is recommended every 12-18 months, plus sub spindle alignment verification adds to ongoing maintenance costs

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base i-400S configurations start around $400,000. Production-ready setups with 20,000 RPM milling spindle, high-pressure through-spindle coolant, expanded tool magazine, and automated part handling typically run $480,000-$600,000. Used i-400S machines from 2014-2020 trade between $180,000 and $380,000 depending on hours, spindle condition, control generation, and options.
02
The i-400 has a single turning spindle with NC tailstock support. The i-400S adds a fully programmable sub spindle with 22 kW (30 hp) and 4,000 RPM for back-working operations. The sub spindle adds roughly $50,000-$80,000 to the price but eliminates the need for a second operation on parts requiring both-end machining. The i-400S also adds approximately 700 kg of machine weight.
03
The i-400S can perform turning on the sub spindle while the milling spindle works on the main spindle side, but true simultaneous turning on both spindles requires the i-400ST variant with its lower turret. The S model sequences operations between spindles during part transfer, while the ST can overlap cutting time between the milling spindle and lower turret.
04
The DN Solutions SMX 3100ST offers similar capability at roughly 70-80% of the Mazak's price, with comparable work envelope and dual spindles. The Mazak counters with faster rapids, the MAZATROL SmoothAi control ecosystem, and a significantly larger North American service network. The SMX 3100ST includes a lower turret standard (comparable to the i-400ST), giving it more simultaneous cutting flexibility at a lower price point.
